Planning a trip to China

I'm thinking of going to China in April. I've looked at some of the packages but am considering just doing it myself! Have you done this and was it straightforward? Thanks

I did it in 2019 and it was fairly straightforward - we travelled around a lot. Don't know if the visa requirements have changed but we had to prove all our travel and accommodation bookings at the visa office. I had done them all in my name and DH had to sign a form to say he would be with me at all times!

We have just spent 3 weeks in China. Started China off in Beijing, then headed to Luoyang, Xi'an, Chengdu, Zhangjiajie, Yangshou, Guilin, then on to Hong Kong then to Macau. We booked the flights (we travelled around before getting to China. We flew to Beijing from Ulaanbaatar, then flew to Kuala Lumpur from Macau), booked the trains through Trip.com. You need to pre-book them as soon as you are able on Trip.com and put in your preferred station and times. They don't go on sale until 15 days before the journey and Trip.com book it for you. It seems daunting, but it seems to work! We booked hotels through hotels.com but people on the China FB group I'm in (Travel in China) seem to recommend booking them through Trip.com. There was no visa required this year, but that may be different next year.

It all depends on how confident you are. We are used to travelling. And my husband is very organised (ex-military) and pro-active. But China is amazing! I didn't expect to love it as much as I did, so I hope you get to go and have a fab time :)

Yes I did it myself. Booked through Booking.com lol. It was fine, easy as anywhere else once the visa was finished. If you’re leaving Beijing or Shanghai though make sure you download a translation app that works over there as most people don’t speak English (so taxis, booking tickets etc can be hard).
