Advice and experiences on having a copper coil fitted tomorrow

Tomorrow I am getting my first coil fitted as I am in a new relationship. I am going to get the copper one. I’ve heard some horror stories of the pain although I have been to the sexual health clinic I am going to before and they were excellent. I am going to take painkiller before, and I’ve had a couple of uncomfortable smears plus a colposcopy. Looking for any advice / tips though on the process… is it really as bad as I’ve heard?

I understand that it is very painful for some women. That unfortunately gives the coil a bit of a bad rep. But for the majority of women it is a pretty routine procedure. It didn’t hurt at all and it was over in moments. I haven’t had a period in years which is as fabulous as it sounds. The fact you trust the provider should help too.

The best way I can think to describe it is like the nurse putting something in there which induces quite intense period pain cramps. It’s short lived but it’s not painless. At least not for me. In my opinion, going in accepting that it’s going to be a bit painful helped me through it. Yes it hurts, no it doesn’t last forever. And the peace of mind and lack of hormones was worth it for me. I’ve had 3 copper and a mirena. Hurts enough I said fuck, was quick enough I didn’t manage to finish saying it. But I do have a tilted uterus and endo
it’s like a giant period cramp when they do the measurement and same again when it’s fitted but it’s not a lengthy pain

I had the Mirena that was fine. Didn’t even notice, not sure about the copper ones. Hopefully they’re the same. I think it depends on the drs experience to if you notice or not, when I had the second one out it was more uncomfortable. ( new dr ).

Thanks everyone. I am going for the copper as I don’t want hormones in my body. I am slightly concerned as I am on mounjaro at the moment and not eating that much but the NHS guidance says to eat a meal before!!

Having the coil fitted didn’t hurt for me. The copper coil my body rejected and tried to push it out so I had to change to another because I was getting on and off pain, a weird discharge and didn’t feel right in myself. This was due to my body rejecting it though.

Eat something. Yoghurt. Toast. Just because they don’t want you fainting
I took a bottle of Coke just in case I did need something sugary

Well I got through it! It was pretty painful at times with sharp period pains but was over really quickly. But now though I am bleeding which I know is to be expected - it’s light as well but I hope it doesn’t carry on for much longer…

Urgh the bleeding won’t stop!! Is this normal?

I don’t remember getting much bleeding but I think it can happen unfortunately. I hope it eases off soon.

I spotted a little the first day but not really proper bleeding. I think it’s to be expected and hopefully over the next couple of days you’ll be right as rain

Okay so I am 12 days post-insertion. Spotted for a few days after but otherwise been totally fine. Up until yesterday. Have had period like cramps and now I am lightly spotting / bleeding despite my period not being due for another 8 or so days. Is this normal??

I’ve had the copper coil and now the Mirena as part of HRT. I definitely bled more with the copper one and spotted for longer. My periods were also longer and heavier than without it. It could take a good few months to settle down which is very annoying but once it settles then you don’t have to worry about it for a few years.
