Getting my first

Tomorrow I am getting my first coil fitted as I am in a new relationship. I am going to get the copper one. I’ve heard some horror stories of the pain although I have been to the sexual health clinic I am going to before and they were excellent. I am going to take painkiller before, and I’ve had a couple of uncomfortable smears plus a colposcopy. Looking for any advice / tips though on the process… is it really as bad as I’ve heard?

I didn’t find coil fitting painful I took a painkiller before , ponstan. I had a colposcopy with no pain relief and that was awful

I haven’t had it before but this reel came up on my Facebook feed recently which you might find helpful (it tells you about the pain relief you can take before or are entitled to during but don’t watch if you are squeamish and don’t want to see the tools used which it shows you from the beginning!)

Hi OP. I had the copper coil fitted around 10 years ago. I won't lie, the insertion was quite painful. But once it was finished the intense pain went away. I took normal painkillers for the rest of the day and just once the next day. I also used a hot water bottle. It worked really well and I had no issues with it. Getting it out was a doddle when I wanted to start TTC. It was worth it for the 20 seconds or so of discomfort!

Ive got a mirena coil and its not a pleasant thing to do and it did hurt but was very brief. I am very squeamish so I close my eyes so I cannot see anything they do or use or would rather not know. Im not sure its much worse than a smear test and I detest those and find it painful!
