TV hidden behind artwork… stylish or naff?

I am considering one of those “rolling art” TV systems; a normal wall mounted TV sits behind a real framed canvas, which automatically rolls up inside the frame when you want to watch it.

I’m considering this because we have a living room with a really awkward layout and this could be a good solution, but I’m honestly not sure if it’s genius or absolutely awful!

So… stylish and clever way to hide a TV? A bit naff? Or am I massively overthinking this?

Additional question… if you could imagine one celebrity who might have this kind of thing in their home, who would it be?

(There would be book shelves either side of the painting/TV so I’m hoping it won’t be toooo obvious)

I don't think these are nice. A TV is fine, a perfectly ordinary thing to have in a room.

A cupboard is better if you really need to hide it.

Why not use the TV to display a continuous but changing feed of art that you like stored for free in a cloud provider or as supplied FOC by the likes of Google or Amazon? Then when you want to watch TV it just swaps images.
I have seen this doe to great effect on some pretty big TV screens as well as smaller domestic units.

I haven’t seen those so I don’t know, but the celebrity that sprang to mind is Stephen Fry.

Displaying digital art would be worse, like in an airport lounge or something.

That is what I was afraid of!

I used to hang an oil painting on stretcher bars over a small wall hung TV to hide it because I think TVs are ugly so who am I to judge? 😂

That isn’t very practical if you watch TV every day though.

I suspect any generic “art” used for these systems is going to be pretty naff and not something I would want on display any more than an ugly TV. I’m imagining something like hotel room art, the visual equivalent of lift muzak 🫤

If you can find a design you love, why not? Who is ever going to know what’s behind it other than your family?

If you watch TV rarely, then might be a good idea. If you watch TV daily then seems a bit pointless.

No idea about celebrities, but maybe someone from the only way is Essex/Newcastle or whatever those shows are? 🤷‍♀️

You could get one of the samsung(?) frame tvs that displays art when not watching tv. Think you need subscription to the art store for the widest range of art but not massively expensive.

We have The Frame from Samsung. It’s fantastic!

I would love to have this but sadly our TV doesn't support it. I vote yes do it!

We have The Frame too. It will display a rotating carousel of art, but you can also load your own photos onto it and set how often they change.

I have never seen such a contraption but it sounds seriously naff. Like the sort of thing Hyacinth Bucket would have thinking it was posh. The actual posh people I know have their TVs mounted the wall or standing on a suitable table like normal people.

Ours displays various very beautiful photos when on and before I switch to watch live Tv. I think you can add your own photos, but we gave up on that because who can be arsed?! I don’t think the art idea is great, tbh. We have a film watching area in the kitchen, massive Tv on the wall opposite the recliner. I don’t even notice it.

I visited my cousins house recently and they have the Frame by Samsung and zi was actuslly really impressed by it that I would consider it too when I need to buy a new TV

Also helped it was on a media wall as opposed to a TV stand. So it wasn't obvious.

+1 for the Samsung Frame! I've seen a couple of them at friends'/family's houses and was pretty impressed. That was several years ago now, too.

But another +1 for Samsung Frame. We’ve slowly replaced all our TVs in the house with Frames and I think they look great.

They have our own photos on, which is free to do. The range of free artwork is pretty good too though.

For me, if I had a TV in the bedroom on a wall, rayher than a boring balck screen all the time on show its much nicer if its displaying some artwork. Particularly if its not used alot.
