Pyjamas during the day?

nutellacrumpets · 25/08/2026 09:15

Is it acceptable to wear pyjamas at home during the day? What about answering the door for parcels? Watering the plants?

I’m talking sensible shorts and t-shirt types?

I exclusively wear loungewear/PJs at home. If I know I'm not leaving the house again that day then you will not catch me in jeans. It's not always PJs, I have loads of trackies/comfy shorts. But sometimes yes it's PJs, and literally who cares.

I wouldn't wear the same pair that I'd woken up in all day and then to bed again. I would at some point put on clean knickers, and change the PJs I wear that night.

But I couldn't give less of a shit about whether the Amazon man or my neighbours think I've had a shower that day. I have 7000 other things to think about before that even crosses my mind.

beaglescurleduplikebagels · 25/08/2026 10:01

Why wouldn't it be acceptable?

MNLurker1345 · 25/08/2026 10:01

So today I have on a smart white long sleeve tee shirt and grey linen drawstring trousers. Very comfortable, not to unlike PJs but definitely not.

Chickadee26 · 25/08/2026 10:02

Sure, maybe throw a robe or something on to answer the door. Loose cotton dresses, are a good choice, no waist chafing.

Linen trousers are my go to. I got these from Zara. I have a few from Zara, and some from M&S.

I source them in the sales. The tee shirt is from M&S.

It is so comfortable and smart.

HoppingPavlova · 25/08/2026 10:07

I do. It’s my work uniform (have a top at hand to chuck on if I need to be on camera, then it comes straight off and back to comfy pj top). I don’t shower in the morning but instead after dinner/tea/evening meal, and then I get changed into a fresh pair of pj’s. I have no issue collecting parcels, going out in car to drop off/collect household members, outside letterbox, potter in front yard etc, all in my pj’s.

I wear clothes for a few hours here and there on the weekend if I go out, and also once a fortnight when I go to office. Works well for me.

itsgettingweird · 25/08/2026 10:08

Of course.

I tend to have what I’d call loungewear.

towelling shorts and tartan bottoms. Various vest tops and t shirts
fleecey tops.

If I’m not going out I’ll wear that at home.

Today I took ds swim training at 5am and went to the gym.

home showered and in “PJs”. Asda order came and also the postwoman. Cleaned kitchen etc.

I’m for lunch so will get dressed ready and when I get home I’ll be back in loungewear, making dinner for DS, preparing picnic for tomorrows day out, reading etc.

The reason I wear the shorts and vest tops I do is because they are cheaper to buy from primark than PJs are!

But why ? Why not just wear shorts and a T-Shirt ? To me wandering around in your PJs all day just makes me think you haven’t had a shower yet .

Some people shower in the evening. I love a PJ day, as long as it’s just me/me and the kids at home. In the winter I’m in my PJ’s/comfy clothes as soon as I’m home!

SereneFinch · 25/08/2026 10:10

I think most psychologists would say it’s better for your mental health to get dressed everyday.

itsgettingweird · 25/08/2026 10:11

It sounds bliss but it’s summer holidays and summer break from swim training!

As of next week I’ll be up, into gym clothes, showered at leisure centre into work clothes, work, home and into comfy clothes and back out to swim training. Then PJs/loungewear and bed ready for the next 4.15am alarm

I’ll be longing for my loungewear days by next Friday half term.

Yes, i prefer to get dressed it changes my mindset.

Girlintheframe · 25/08/2026 10:14

Absolutely

Ratherhaveacupofteaandabiscuit · 25/08/2026 10:14

Spending the day in pyjamas is one of life’s little luxuries.

If I am not expecting anybody or going outside I often get up, wash and put on clean pjs for the day.

I do wear a secret support style vest top though because I have big boobs and wouldn’t feel comfortable answering the door to a postie etc with them on display.

If I was flat chested I wouldn’t be bothered.

I wouldn't do this but each to their own. If you are happy answering the door in your PJ's go for it.

Mycatmax · 25/08/2026 10:14

Absolutely fine, I love a pyjama day.

A pj day every now and then does wonders for my mental heath.

They may well say that, but that doesn't mean it's not acceptable to wear your jammies all day, which is what the OP was asking about.

How? That’s not a dig just interest .

o guess because I’m up and out the house 4.30 until 7.30 every day and so I find days I can wear lounge around, potter, clean, bake and read in loungewear is positive for my mindset.

Aiming4Optimistic · 25/08/2026 10:19

If I'm not at work, I often get up and do all my housework in my PJs before I have a shower - it makes sense to not put clean clothes on when you are going to be cleaning.
I'd have no issue in answering the door or watering the plants - my body is covered.
I'll also have a shower and put clean PJs on, if I'm not going out - they are soft and comfortable . Who do I need to impress, in my own home?

I wouldn't go the school run or go to the shop in them though - I draw the line at anything which requires leaving my own property.

poachy · 25/08/2026 10:19

I absolutely love a MN pyjama thread. Some people get extremely vexed about the issue and I find it really fascinating. Obviously what we are all raised with, but it shocks me the level of emotion the issue generates!

For me a jammie day is a wonderful thing, I love when I have nowhere I need to be and I can be very slow about waking up. Ie pps who were talking about mindset - for me the jammie mindset is ‘I’m going slowly today and enjoying not being ready for the day’. If I know I have shit to get done, it’s not a good idea to do it. But the idea of judging anyone for doing this is wild to me!

To be honest I don't know, I just feel better /different when I get changed out of my pyjamas,

TheChosenTwo · 25/08/2026 10:21

I don’t own pyjamas but when I get up I will put on something like shorts and tshirt or joggers if it’s cold and go to the bathroom and shower to get ready for the day. Even if I don’t have much planned I leave the house every day - unless I’m ill and then I’ll just lie in bed all day with whatever comfortable clothes I fancy.
Being in pyjamas at home makes me feel glum, as kids we lived in a flat and generally didn’t leave it from Friday when we got home from school until Monday morning when we went back to school. I remember feeling just blah at spending entire weekends just doing nothing, hanging about in pyjamas. Which is probably why I’m so anti them now!
