Woken by a nightmare about intruders and my late husband

I’ve just woken up from a nightmare. I’m on my own, DH died 18 months ago. Someone got into the house by forcing the patio doors, then DH was here telling me not to worry. I’m upset now and wide awake.

Couldn't leave you alone.

I think your DH was telling you not to be scared of the nightmare itself.

Oh no you poor thing. I'm so sorry.

I'm a widow too and I have nightmares so I can relate. I'm a few years further on than you though. (Still single though and don't see that changing.)

Dreams can be upsetting. I'm sorry.

KittyWilkinson · 25/08/2026 00:41

I'm really so sorry, dreams can be unsettling.. There is always someone about here so you did right to shout up. Lovely that your DH was there in your dream to reassure you. How are you doing now? 💐

I’m staying awake, as I’m scared of going back to sleep. Thanks for the lovely replies. ❤️

You probably won't have another nightmare. I remember my mum saying that to me once and it seems to be true. I do take medication to help me sleep sometimes. (Prescribed after dh died) Also helps my mood if needed

KittyWilkinson · 25/08/2026 00:48

I usually have a lamp on downstairs, I find it helps when I'm on my own. Perhaps put some gentle music on or the radio for a bit for some distraction? I don't sleep very well so I'm lurking about for a while. X

I have two plug in lights. One for upstairs and one for downstairs. It feels less scary having some lights on.

I probably shouldn’t have eaten those jammy dodgers this evening but I did enjoy them.

You should of eaten those a Jammy Dodgers. Sorry to hear you had disturbed sleep. Hopefully you got all your tonight's worries out and could go back to sleep in a while for a good sleep. If I can't sleep sometimes I put one of those YouTube channels on, they're only on at nighttime, soothing music. Could you put a few lights on in the house? I hope you do get some rest.

TheQueenOfEverything · 25/08/2026 01:05

I've had similar nightmares and my partner also passed away last year.

I had a dream I was driving an aeroplane last night I don't even like flying, the mind can do some weird things after such a loss.

I hope you manage to get back to sleep

KittyWilkinson · 25/08/2026 01:05

I'm a Jaffa cake fiend. Perhaps we should be doing the whole milky drink and warm bath thing before we go to bed and leave the biscuits. Although I'm a real comfort eater.
Do you have family or friends who look in on you at all? Although they aren't always the best help even if they are about I find.

longtimesun · 25/08/2026 01:19

I live on my own and was quite scared at first for a couple of weeks. I try never to watch anything unsettling on tv and generally enjoy the peace.

Someone breaking into your house in a dream could be a boundary issue. Perhaps someone has crossed your boundaries in some way recently and your unconscious mind has flagged it and sending you a little warning to be aware. How lovely that your late husband is soothing you in the dream.

KittyWilkinson · 25/08/2026 08:14

I hope that you got some sleep @Joliloily . How are you this morning?

tsmainsqueeze · 25/08/2026 08:30

Have you got a good lock for your patio door?
It could be a subconscious worry , I feel much better about security with my lock.
I hope you are feeling better this morning.

Glad you got some sleep. My late dh still appears in my dreams from time to time 8 years on.
