Have people lost the ability to behave in the cinema?

I’ve been twice in the last few weeks and have been immensely irritated by people seemingly unable to leave their mobiles alone. Tonight the family behind us were chatting throughout the film and ignored all of the shushing from others. I also have thoughts on bringing toddlers to a 12a film-not designed for 3 year olds, no wonder they were fidgety!

People have lost their ability to behave pretty much everywhere.

People can't stay off their phones in the royal opera house even when spending over one hundred pounds for a ticket.

This is exactly what I was going to say!

im with you: it puts me off going to the cinema tbh! And theatre. I try and do weeknight / term time theatre in London as seems the others who go can actually behave themselves.

Reported the weird response.

I’m very glad not to have experienced this round here and I’d certainly be asking them to be quiet or complaining to staff if I did experience it. It’s not on.

There’s a lot to be said about watching it at home, where I don’t have to deal with other people’s rudeness. I don’t think it’s hard to not sit and send emails (as the person in front of me was doing tonight) for circa 2 hours. In the end I asked them to stop, as I couldn’t focus on the film whilst they were deep into their inbox.

Yep. Wherever you go, as pps have said.

Don't get me started on people in supermarket queues who take calls while the poor worker is checking their items through. It's SO rude, and slows everything down.

I no longer go to the cinema. I last went properly in the 2000s, and the few times I've tried to go recently, all you saw were mobile phone lit up and people chatting. I'd rather go home and pay some cable channel £20 to watch the movie instead.

I was on a boat trip the other week, and despite the scenery being stunningly beautiful the person opposite me sat on tik tok, seemed such a waste of both time and money when they needn’t have left home!

I know! I just went recently for the first time in a couple of years. Bloke two seats down (empty one between us) kept going on his bloody phone with the blaring light, so annoying! I ended up putting my hand up by my face to block it

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 24/08/2026 21:11

I really love to see a film on the big screen, but... the heads gobbling enormous buckets of popcorn, slurping gallons of drink, looking at phones, talking, kids running around the seating, just makes it unbearable. I sat through films from a very young age, seems good behaviour is rapidly becoming a thing of the past.

Dobeebeedah · 24/08/2026 21:11

My pet hate, that I do address most of the time, is some person treating the back of my seat like a football. This is not only annoying but it hurts.

A lot of people seem to think they are entitled to do whatever they want and not consider other people around. The ignorance is astounding.

Springpartyideas · 24/08/2026 21:12

Yep - I went to see the Ryan Gosling Sci-Fi recently at 7.30pm and there was a family in there with 3 young kids in their pyjamas. One was a baby and the other two were both under 6. Obviously the kids were terrified/over tired and it was a nightmare for everyone in the cinema - totally mad.

It's because they have the attention span of a gnat

Ribenaberry12 · 24/08/2026 21:13

I only tend to go at quiet or unsociable times now so I don’t have to put up with it. I went at 10am today, only about 20 people, it was lovely!

I only go to the BFI cinema or my local indie now, where food isn’t allowed and the ushers (yes they have them) are on you like a ton of bricks if you even think about getting a phone out.
