Why are you a mean parent - according to your children??

A lighthearted one . Thought I would share some reasons lately that have meant I am a horrible / mean mother , according to my 12 year old:

I wouldn’t let him go bodyboarding on holiday for the first time ever , during outgoing tide when there were warnings of rip tides and no lifeguards around . Context - we were on holiday and said we would go but on this particular day it got too late . Myself and another adult family member there both can’t swim so I said we would go the next day at the times specified for bodyboarding with a marked area and lots of lifeguards present. Clearly, I should not have put his safety first and should have understood that he wanted to do it so any warnings were not applicable .

I wouldn’t let him just swim out to sea . Context - it was just before sunset, was sat at a bar on the beach and said he could paddle where I could see him ,just in the start of the water , like all the other children . He asked what would happen if wind blew his ball in to the sea , I said he would leave it. He argued that he had paid £2 for that ball and didn’t want to just lose it. Clearly , I should have understood this was a big purchase and that ball came before his life and I should have just said if it went out , he could just keep swimming and in fact, if he wanted to , just go the whole hog and swim through the whole ocean to the closest country.

I wouldn’t let him travel alone on a train 30 miles away to stay over at a friends house who’s parents I had never met. Context - that is all the context. He wanted to stay at a friends house, who had moved schools , I said it was too far and I didn’t know the parents so absolutely not and he said what if I get the train so you don’t have to drive me. Clearly , when he has only ever walked to the local school before , I should understand that he is almost a competent adult and therefore if he wants to make his way to another city to go and sleep at a strangers house , then that is his choice.

Anyone else been an awful parent during these school holidays ? 🤣

I have two. I can’t remember the reasons but

a). 6.50am. She (ahem) tells me she hates me ‘cos, I dunno, reasons. I just said “I’m going back to bed now so you had better get a wriggle on and catch the bus as I won’t be taking you to school this morning”. That blew her mind. What? Why? “I’m the mother of a teenage daughter and my sole ambition when I woke up this morning was to be hated by you today. It’s not even 7 am and my ambition has been fulfilled. I’m away back to my bed”. Ooh, her face was a picture, it was so funny.

b). Got her to school one day and went to the supermarket. Met a mate. How has your morning been? Etc. “I’m the worst mother in the world” sez I. “You can’t be” sez my mate. “That’s me this morning. I know it’s true. I was told so this morning quite firmly”. Cue a long discussion in the supermarket aisle about who was the worst mother in the world. (I’m quite sure it wasn’t my lovely, wise, gentle friend).

Great response to her 🤣 I love that she didn’t even have a reason 🤣

Well, we have a sword. A real one. So that’s one thing she’s not deprived of.

Today's reason my 10yr old is a bit miffed with me is I gave him 9 cocktails sausages for lunch instead of his usual 10.

For not buying her £50 Clarks shoes with a charm bracelet or a £37.50 smiggle backpack for when she goes into year one…

Ha! My DS (aged 30) still thinks I’m mean for not allowing him to play Call of Duty when he was 14.

My son used to get really annoyed that I wouldn’t take him to KFC, because all his friends went there with their parents. See also Disney.

Oh, and he was really embarrassed that we had a Volvo, so made me drop him off down the road, if I ever took him to school (it was on my way to work).

He laughs about all these things now!!

My daughter once cried “why does everyone else have nice parents and I have horrible parents!”

She’s 6, and I’d told her we needed to wash her hair that evening.

I’m the worst mum this weekend because I refuse to buy dd MORE jeans when she already has multiple pairs and has just received a paycheck the equivalent of a full time months pay for an adult.

im also the worst mum because I was five mins late picking her up from work so she had a whole five mins of waiting.
told her that’s fine she can walk next time.

Iamuhtredsonofuhtred · 24/08/2026 22:22

I wouldn’t take the morning off work to drive her to Reading festival.
