Banned from my local supermarket after an argument with a member of staff- my language was bad though.

So today I’ve been banned from my local supermarket, I’m not proud of what happened but I think that the member of staff was also in the wrong.

i was in the fruit and veg aisle looking to get some pre- chopped melon. The ones that come in sealed plastic pots. They were stacked quite tightly and some of the dates were quite soon, so I decided to go towards the back, in doing this I accidentally knocked 5 or 6 pots off the shelf. Immediately a female member of staff was on me- telling me “ you’re supposed to take the ones from the front”. I apologised for knocking some of them from the shelf but explained that it was my choice to choose the date that I wanted. By this point I had reassembled the display, so no harm done. She carried on chuntering so I said something like “ it’s really not a big deal, let’s move on”. As I went to walk away she said, “ it’s just not on”. I’m afraid this is where I let myself down. She was a small pointy woman of about 60 with short dyed red hair. I asked her what her problem was and she said “ customers like you thinking they own the place” to which I replied ( I know this is bad) “fuck off and shut your cunt up you fucking crackhead Anne Robinson lookalike”. It’s not often I take such a low blow but I had a rough upbringing and when I’m really pushed it emerges. The lady stormed off.

as I was leaving a manager asked me if I could step into an office for a chat, I said no thank you. She then said well I’m afraid that you won’t be able to shop here moving forwards.

so that’s that. Not proud of my mouth but she was a fucking horrible twat.

The way I see it there are 3 kinds of people in the world. The kind that are horrified by this, the kind that find it hilarious, and the kind that are horrified that they find it hilarious.

Edited

Just to be clear, we’d all find it hilarious after the cuntsomer customer had been banned and it was done with. assuming it happened. Which tbh the way the general behave, it absolutely could and does happen. I think most shop staff have at least one story of a customer behaving in a very similar way.

That's the funniest thing I've heard today! Sorry for laughing but that's brilliant...I would have laughed at that if I had been her!

Dollymylove · 24/08/2026 19:23

Girlwithavibe · 24/08/2026 16:07

She unfortunately pushed your buttons she knew what she was doing !!
You don't keep poking the bear !she's a shop worker u don't talk to customers like that either !!!
Obviously op lost the plot and u know what sometimes people Can push u to explode , the good thing is u know u fucked up op the best thing to do is email the manager and State clearly what the worker did before u lost your rag ! Because she was the one that pushed the situation !

Nah dont bother emailing the manager. All they will do is have a good laugh and you will still be banned.
Just find anothrr supermarket to shop and try not to act like a 12 year old kid trying act hard in front of their mates 😁

Rosesanddaffs · 24/08/2026 19:24

@Alderedge1 of course you were wrong with the language but that insult has made me laugh 😂🙊

Maybe you can go back and apologise xx

Springsummertime · 24/08/2026 19:32

Scummy behaviour!! You have issues!

I’m actually with you on this. She was equally offensive to you, the only difference is you swore and she didn’t. I would be writing to their head office and making a complaint about how she was rude and pushed you until you exploded.

In the words of the streets - don’t start nothing, won’t be nothing 😂

Edited

She wasn't equally offensive at all.

And trust me, where I've worked (for a well known supermarket) head office tended to not give a shit about complaints from customers regarding apparent rudeness by their staff in many cases, not in all obviously.

I've had complaints in the past accusing me of being rude, but I've only ever stood up for myself against customers who thought they could speak to me like I was shit on their shoe. Don't get me wrong, the majority of people were civil and friendly, but you'd always get some customers who reported staff for rudeness, even though it was the customer who was rude first!
I remember being called a 'fat bitch' on one occasion (over something trivial), and because I replied to the customer with 'that's rich coming from you', she reported me.

HR's response, in a round about way, when I explained what happened, 'fuck em'.
They deal with malicious reports all the time.

There's no point in reporting staff just to try to get them into trouble, it you've been an arsehole to them.

Kate011 · 24/08/2026 18:24

is it?

I see like millions of people everyday insulting, shouting and swearing at workers

and unlike in the op, for no reason at all.

I have yet to see any of them punished

Edited

So we should just put up with it? Good on the store for protecting their staff.

Alderedge1 · 24/08/2026 14:02

I know and I agree it looks disproportionate. I think it was just her nasty, spiky unpleasantness and the fact that she thought she could tell which pot to buy, it was the “acting like I own the place” comment that tipped me. I was just trying to find some melon that would last a few days!!

She wasn't nasty and you were the one who messed up the display and knocked 6 plastics pots of fruit to the ground which could have damaged them and became verbally abusive.
This whole situation was a you problem so stop trying to shift the blame for your poor behaviour.
You behaved inappropriately, potentially damaging shop property and then got abusive when pulled up on your bad behaviour

keepincool · 24/08/2026 18:03

I was once called a "saggy old cunt" by a guy riding his bike on the pavement and getting so close he knocked a drink out of my hand. I shouted at him that he shouldn't be on the pavement.

I wasn't sure which hurt more, being called saggy or being called old? I stewed on it all day. The cunt bit was neither here nor there in the circumstances.

For all anyone knows, the assistant might be more upset at being compared to Anne Robinson.

Would have been the loss of the coffee for me.

Exactly what I thought. Disgusting behaviour. Retail work is hard enough without people like OP being so unnecessarily rude

Alderedge1 · 24/08/2026 18:13

It’s a fucking shop!!! We all rummage around the shelves! What’s wrong with u?

True. If the dates weren't so short on everything, we wouldn't have to. Supermarkets are pedalling shite close to expiration at full price. Completely unreasonable to berate someone for looking for something with a half decent use by date.

TeaCupTinsel · 24/08/2026 19:56

I don't agree with the insults as I think it went too far but I do see why she got your back up.
I always go to the back for the best dates. I don't have a lot of money so I need food to last for as long as possible and I don't think the member of staff should have berated you for that. I've knocked things over before (not intentionally, I have a condition which sometimes makes my hands tremor) but I always try to be as careful as possible and put things back gently.
Especially as you were shopping in Waitrose which is one of the more expensive supermarkets. We only go to there or M&S for very special occasions e.g. a birthday treat and I'd be making sure that I got the longest dates possible as the price adds up quickly.

I do think you astronomically escalated but if you were to go and apologise I hope things would be righted.

Moveoverdarlin · 24/08/2026 20:00

In fairness she started it. Customers are entitled to chose whatever produce they like. Items get knocked off the shelves all the time, bottles of wine get dropped. Kids knock things. Customers don’t get a bollocking. In my local Waitrose all the staff can’t do enough for you. She shouldn’t have been rude to you, but yeah you were 5,000 times ruder back.

Just avoid it for a few weeks.

Alderedge1 · 24/08/2026 15:18

Mauled? I picked them up from the shelf? Is there a more hygienic method that I’m unaware of? Should I have donned a pair of fucking latex gloves?

Aw. There, there.

Foul language and casual ageism. What the hell has her age or hair colour got to do anything. I’d ban you for life.

Eggs2022 · 24/08/2026 20:06

Most offensive thing about this was the use of the word chuntering

Hoardasurass · 24/08/2026 20:06

@Alderedge1 you do realise that when you try and sneak back in you will be escorted out by the security staff and risk a trespass arrest

Seems to me your nasty attitude is not reserved simply for assistants.

Beattie121 · 24/08/2026 20:09

You should have just settled for a simple ‘fuck off’ if you feel the need to get back at her. I myself am reactive and explode often (I am working on this) but you did go over the top I’m afraid. It’s done now, apologise if you wish, forget about it, and find a new supermarket.
