Travelling on a passport in my maiden name. Any complications?

I got married last year and gave changed my surname with most things including the DVLA but my passport is still in my maiden name.

Will it be OK to travel on my current passport as long as the flights are in my maiden name? I am due to travel in the next month so it would be tight timing to get my passport updated. As the DVLA uses your passport photo, I just want to ensure I won't be flagged up at the border. Many thanks.

When you get married you don't lose the right to use your birth name. It's still yours. Just don't use it to commit fraud.

Thanks. The passport office and DVLA are both government bodies so wasn't sure if they were linked somehow.

Just make sure your tickets (and hotel booking) are in your maiden name.

@Kingfisherwaves i travelled on my passport with my maiden name for 7years after marriage, wasn’t going to pay for a new one just for the sake of it.

As long as the rest of the holiday I.e flights and accommodation matches your passport.

I got married 6 years ago and still use my passport with my maiden name. I renewed it just before the wedding (Covid - we'd already cancelled one wedding and weren't sure the 2nd would go ahead!)

It’s fine. I got a new passport the year before I got married so travelled in my maiden name for nine years. Just had to remember not to book anything in my married name.

Why did you change your name? It's not compulsory.

I delayed getting my passport name changed. Plane tickets were booked with my maiden name. I carried a copy of my marriage certificate in case anybody queried the name disparity with hotel bookings etc. Never had a problem though.

You can use both names for the rest of your life, as long as you are not doing it to commit fraud.

It should be fine as long as the tickets are in the same name, but if you’re unsure, take a copy of your marriage certificate with you to be safe.

Sometimes people change their name to make a new start for personal reasons. You can use any name you wish so long as its not for fraudulent purposes. Its not so easy now but back in the 1980s I changed my name "by usage" when I went to uni. That means you simply inform people like the tax, bank etc that you have changed your name. You can formalise it by making a "statutory declaration" on a form you get from the law stationers. I used that to change my passport. Back in those days organisations like universities and employers simply accepted you with the name you presented.

Absolutely fine, I have just done this.. Also make sure your travel insurance is booked in your maiden name too.

It’s fine as long as the flights and any hotel booking is made in your maiden name. Hotel is important as if you are overseas many ask to see passport to meet local legislation.

I still had 8 years remaining on mine when we got married, no way was I paying for a new one, and I bloody loved the photo! Had 4 kids in that period and went on holiday, no one batter an eyelid. Dh probably made all the hotel bookings and probably did put my name down as his surname, no questions were ever asked.

All bookings need to be in the name on your passport. My passport isn’t in my married name

I did for 5 years as I wasn’t paying for a new one. Legally you can use either name. Just make sure you book travel n your maiden name.
