Why do some people excuse wrongdoing within their own race or religion?

Why is race such a big deal to some people?

I know someone, lets call her Jennifer, who is a known fraudster and has been convicted for fraud. However, she is very 'religious' and all her friends are from the same race as her and her church.

I spoke to some of her friends and asked them why they hung with her, invited her to parties etc. and the answers they gave me were:

  1. She's one of us cos shes our race /religion
despite the fact they knew she was going around committing fraud and knew abt her convictions etc.

They would never tolerate this from strangers so why tolerate this from someone who is part of their race/religion

It's maybe because that person is 'one of them'

I knew a woman who met and married a man who was a pedophile

She knew he was a pedophile and married him anyway

She had 3 dc with him, purely for the benefits and so he could abuse them once they became the 'right' age

And he did with her full knowledge and consent

He was sent to prison, kids put in care, she moved on and found god

The eldest ended up murdering her new boyfriend just to hurt her and he'll spend the rest of his life in prison

The members of the church know all about her background but accept her because she goes with them to church every Sunday morning and helps at their coffee mornings

They wouldn't go near her if she wasn't 'one of our own'

Surely both of those examples are more about forgiveness ( which is a major aspect of Christianity?) If they are part of the church then turfing them out is hardly " Christian" so maybe they feel they need to give them another chance? If they are Christian then the judgement comes from God not them according to their religion

Or Sex. Patriarchy I.e. to maintain power.

Better to keep wrongdoers close than allow their wrongdoing to be openly scrutinised.

I think sometimes people don’t have the confidence to speak out, or they worry they’ll lose their own support network.

Child sexual abuse is a common one, a surprising number of people are completely fine with it, especially if their own child isn’t the victim. Its essentially supported in public as well, newspapers until recently would countdown until a 15 year old child became a 16 year old child. Look at people like Courtney Stodden, rather than being recognised as a child being manipulated and sexually abused, she was demonised and grown adults claimed “she knows what she’s doing”. Or they’ll claim it isn’t their place to judge a peadophile, personally if someone feels peadophilia doesn’t deserve judgement they probably think peadophilia is okay.

I agree with notion because that person is 'one of them' which I totally disagree with.

It's a bit like the media, if a crime is done by 'one of their own' it reported lightly without strong accusations of the person/religion/race. If it's done by someone "outside" then they are shown as dangerous.

I think you are being selective to confine it to a group with a common race or religion. Far more likely to be sex (men excusing other men) or other common factors. Politicians of the same political party is another example.

I haven't seen her for over 20 years (thankfully)

Last time I saw her,I was coming out of the local post office and she was stood just outside

I went to walk away from her and she barrelled up to me and tried to start chatting to me like nothing was wrong

I told her to 'fuck off her name' and she started crying just as some woman walked up to me and started yelling at me!

Shouting in my face that only 'god can judge!' 'god knows everything!' and 'that i will pray for your soul!' before taking the woman's arm and marching off (giving me dirty looks as they went)

The woman knew he was a pedophile, she'd given birth for him to have his 'toys' close to home (saved him a job-he didnt have to put any work in) and had gone along with having kids purely for the benefit money and a 'free house' (she admitted this in court) but I was the one in the wrong for telling to to do one!

They know all this but because she goes along with what they say, she's the one who's admitted her sins and all is forgiven

They've even hounded her adult dc to have contact with her ('only god can forgive' fuck all about the poor souls that lived their own hell at their parents hands)

They just cannot see what is in front of them
