A spider landed on my forehead in the night

I'm in my 60s, live alone and have a lifelong fear of spiders. Last night I was startled awake by something touching my forehead, reached up to feel what it was and swept an enormous spider off my forehead onto the pillow. I jumped out of bed and put the light on, at which point I realised just what had happened and exactly how big the spider was. I think it must have fallen off the ceiling as it passed overhead. I ran to get a glass and card and had to move bedding around to find the spider and then struggled to slide the card under the glass on a soft surface. Anyhow, once it was light, I took it to the end of the garden and let it go. I even went back to bed and actually slept! This is a non event for most people but an absolutely huge achievement for me. I just needed to get it out somewhere as I won't speak to anyone today. Go me! 😀

Blimey that was brave, well done! A huge one fell on our eldest DD’s head in the shower ages ago. Set off a huge phobia.

Your poor daughter! Note to self, check the ceiling before you get in the shower 🤣

I had one monster covering my eye when I woke up one morning. Aged 9. I've hated them ever since.

You acted amazingly - brava 👏

Had a huge one drop onto my shoulder. I heard it land. I screamed like a banshee. Husband came running thought I was being attacked by a mad axe murderer. You are very brave. Well done you

I'm gearing up for a false widow cull shortly we have them all over the garden

Mycatmax · 22/08/2026 20:09

You were really brave. I would probably have had a heart attack and dropped down dead.

Set the house on fire. There’s no going back from this.

Breadcat24 · 22/08/2026 20:59

At least you do not sleep with your mouth open

RemindMeIn15Minutes · 22/08/2026 21:19

Awww really well done. I like spiders - but would NOT have liked that experience.

Dilemma999 · 23/08/2026 09:18

This happened to me once - it felt almost wet in my forehead. I screamed the house down and then couldn’t find it for ages so lost a few hours sleep. I still scan the ceiling and pull back the covers before getting into bed each night.

poachy · 23/08/2026 09:25

Ahhh well done to you! Winning at life!!

They stick a thread on to the ceiling and parachute down. I had one land on my arm in the night - it was felt cold and sort of damp. The big hairy spiders are harmless. The ones with small bodies and long thin legs can give a tiny nip if they are startled. They are also vicious to other spiders - I found one trussing up a large hairy spider one night in or kitchen - I tried to rescue the big hairy one by chasing the aggressor away and picking the thread off with tweezers but it is sticky and I couldn’t save him.

They can nip!!! Oh no. One of the things that kept me calm was internally chanting "It's north-west UK. Spiders can't bite." The one that dropped on me had fat legs and a long body, not spindly legs, so I guess the safer kind?

I actually really like spiders. I let them stay so they can get the flies. They've all got names. Marvin lives in the bathroom and sometimes he falls in the bath, so I make him a little rope out of tissue and he climbs up. He's learnt to start walking over to me when he sees me coming with the rope now.
