Haircut regret

WinMcwinface · 21/08/2026 16:14

I chopped my bra length hair off yesterday for a long bob, low lights and grey coverage. I was happy as I came out the hairdresser. I have washed jt this pm as I had time to practice styling it myself and I hate it. I can not style it for love no money. The colour looks too red in my lighting. I feel old fashioned and dowdy and full of regrets. I feel I’ve chopped my youth away. I’m 44 and feeling full of peri hormonal rollercoaster-ness and feel like Samson post haircut. I have followed tutorials, even asked chatgpt to give me step by step but nope. I’m out tonight and it’s back in a messy bun. I want to cry. It’s only hair, I know, but as Fleabag said, hair is everything.

What sort of effect are you after? Long bobs are very versatile. If you blow dry it and scrunch the roots you get a messy beach look, if you blow dry with a 360 degree bristle brush to curl the ends under you get a sleek Anna Wintour look, or if you curl them outwards, a more 60s flipped look. If you twist the hair on rollers or foam you get tousled curls. Blow dry it dead straight and you get a preppy look.

Purple shampoo might tone down any red or brassy tones.

Can you post an image, I suspect it’s the change and also your make up may need updating.

TrojanDonkey · 21/08/2026 16:59

Can you post a before and after pic?

Ah my empathies Op.
Exactly 3 years ago today I went one worse... had my very long hair cut off...into a pixie!!
About 5 snips in, I realised it was a mistake but too late. Came home, looked in the mirror and cried...my Dad was looking back at me😂It was awful...I just looked OLD .
It's taken me 3 years to have hair again (just past shoulders as I had to keep getting it trimmed as it grew outwards like a mushroom!) Yours won't take long to BE long again, and meantime keep looking at tutorials... you still have plenty of hair to play with and I bet other people think it looks fine!
(No one commented on mine which tells you how awful I looked!)

FierceFireFairy · 21/08/2026 19:41

What hair type do you have? Straight, wavy or curly?
If straight rough dtry upside down then smootth the end with a flat brush wrapping ot from one side to the other.
If wavy or curly I'd go with the natural waves, you can use conditioner as a curl cream, leave hair to air dry.
Pop back to your stylist and say you need to be shown how to style it (I am a hairdresser and always show my clients how to do it themselves)
Purple shampoo or yoy may need another toner from the salon.
Hopefully with a week or so it will settle, hair usually go in to stock after a big cut.
I hope your ok, hair isnt just hair and you can be upset. I hope you can learn to love it.

Sobriety78 · 21/08/2026 19:54

Honestly I do this every couple of years - love it in the chair and then when I wash and style it the first 2 or 3 times it looks shite. Then I get used to it and life is good again.
Chuck it in the messy bun and then have another go in a day or 2.
And have a beer or a good snack to make yourself feel better!

BuildbyNumbere · 21/08/2026 20:08

Do you have freeze ease and decent straighteners?
Might be worth changing your shampoo too … I change brand every few months … really notice the difference!

Morepositivemum · 21/08/2026 20:18

I did similar (but myself) recently, same thing peri menopausal fit! I think maybe you’re just craving how it looked yesterday. It will grow, and quicker than you think, honestly x Another asking for a pic- it may not be as bad as you think

KrazyKatty · 21/08/2026 20:25

If you’re struggling to style it, go back to your hairdresser and ask to book in for a styling lesson. A good hairdresser should be able to show you some different looks with that amount of length.

However, I love my pixie cut and can’t imagine having boring long hair. 😂

Huckleberries · 21/08/2026 20:28

That’s pretty drastic depending on how long the long bob is!

You’re bound to feel unsettled. I need to at least have my hair over my shoulders otherwise it just seems wrong. See how you feel tomorrow.

Noonereallyinteresing · 21/08/2026 20:55

Book another appointment and ask for styling lesson. Well done for being brave and getting the chop in the first place!

LifeIsTooShort247 · 21/08/2026 21:21

I usually find I don't like my haircut the day after its cut then I love it after 2-3 days. If you are struggling as others have said go back for some styling tips from the hair dresser. I am sure its not as bad as you think it is :)

SazzleCC · 21/08/2026 21:49

Get extensions - tapes or a weave. The hairdresser can then cut bits to make it look like long layers with the shortest layer being the bob.

garlictwist · 21/08/2026 22:08

No advice but I made the same mistake a couple of weeks ago. Too short and with a fringe of all things. I look like a mushroom. I’m just pinning it back until it grows again which it will. Try not to be upset. It’s not a permanent change.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 21/08/2026 22:18

Red fades quickest so if you're worried about "too red" it shouldn't be a worry for long.
I dye my own hair and don't wash it for a good 36-48 hours to let it settle

Doone22 · 21/08/2026 22:22

Chill. It grows back

That would be a huge amount of hassle for her hair which grows!

@garlictwist I’m sure you don’t look like a mushroom that would be a very specific haircut

Colour doesn’t ‘settle’. 😂

WinMcwinface · 22/08/2026 10:13

Thanks everyone. Cold light of day and it’s not too harsh. My sister is coming over and hopefully teaching me what’s what. Honestly, this second puberty is no fun!

Buy yourself a babyliss big hair or a revlon one step. ( barrel brush and hairdryer in one) the babyliss rotates and is great once you get used to it.

I need a hair cut but am worried about this. I keep wanting a bob like Siân Brooke's in Blue Lights. But then I see women who are my age and shape with very straight bobs and the style looks so aging and characterless. Longer, choppier cuts seem to work better but no one wants to cut them any more.

It oxidies . And if I want to keep my colour , giving it a cou0le of days before I wash helps to do that .

I was going to say this. I’ve got the Revlon brush and it’s an absolute game changer

Yes, I have highlighted hair which also has a toner on and have to promise my hairdresser I won’t wash it for 48-72 hours to let it oxidise. She then uses more product than I use in a year so I’m dying to wash it by the third day as it feels like a thatched roof! 😁
