What do you do on a quiet wfh day?

My whole team including my boss seem to be on annual leave today and summer is a quiet time for us anyway. Altogether - not much to do!

Work-wise I have monitored my emails in case anything comes in (it hasn’t), so I have:

  • done some life admin and made a few phone calls
  • walked into town to get a few bits
  • made my husband some lunch
  • started on some baking I wanted to do at the weekend
  • watched some of the series I’m watching

Anyone else had a quiet wfh day? What do you do with it? I always feel like you can’t actually take it “off” because you are meant to be working but I also don’t see the point in being chained to my desk when there’s not a lot going on.

I spend far too much time on here!!

SaraHoliday · 21/08/2026 14:35

I have been known to watch the odd Christmas film when I WFH🎄 I move from the office and set up a makeshift office downstairs in front of the TV!

The run up to Christmas is a great time for getting those presents wrapped while listening to end of year briefings with your camera off!

I'm dipping in and out of housework tasks today!

Peonies12 · 21/08/2026 14:40

Laundry, meal prep, gardening, hoover, long lunch reading my book, clear out clothes/toys.

SaraHoliday · 21/08/2026 14:41

I used to like chatting to someone on MumsNet who was also WFH too.....🧩

Tiptopflipflop · 21/08/2026 14:42

I wish I had a job where there wasn't an endless backlog to clear. I can't imagine genuinely having nothing work wise that I could crack on with.

mindutopia · 21/08/2026 14:43

Normally, I’d work. There is never such a thing as no work to do. I can always find something that needs future planning.

GinJeanie · 21/08/2026 14:45

I'm so jealous! 😆

I could probably find something but honestly I make the least effort to not get picked up on it. Life is too short.

SaraHoliday · 21/08/2026 14:48

Consider it as multi-tasking!

sleepwouldbenice · 21/08/2026 14:50

Work

willowstar · 21/08/2026 14:53

I have a senior leadership role and have always got lots and lots and lots to do. I have no idea what it would feel like to have nothing to do for work! Having said that when I work from home I do work differently and give myself a bit of recovery time if needs be. Just to sit and eat lunch in the garden or nap for half and hour if I didn't sleep well.

Amazing.
And yet people have the gall to complain about public sector worker pay and pensions ....

Who said people on this thread were public sector?

As pps say, I spend a little more time on here! I do start work at 7am though (contracted hours are 9am-5pm but I do a lot more so I don't feel bad if I answer a few mumsnet questions, or slightly extend my lunch break.)

My partner and I have wandered into town twice this week during lunch, as we've stumbled upon some absolutely brilliant independent local cafes and bakeries, which we both have absolutely no idea how we've missed in 5 years of living here!

ElegantDress · 21/08/2026 15:02

My job isn't very fast-paced but I cannot imagine ever not having anything that needs
doing, it's another world.

?? She said a "quiet day" which tells you that it's not the norm.

I'm not commenting on private sector, but all I can say is that I'm private, so is my partner, and we absolutely work our asses off. I am in the private cancer research field, and it can be harrowing.

TheGirlWhoLived · 21/08/2026 15:04

Pshhh and people say us SAHM have it easy! How the other half live eh 😉

Thank you - in many roles if your whole team is off and projects rely on other people having an input then there really isn’t a lot you can get on with once your bit is finished

We need a picture of your cat to see if it can afford the calories!

I eat biscuits and mumsnet.

We got our WFH day taken off us as people were too busy not working, or at least making an effort to pretend to be

So now they can just pretend to work in the office instead? The notion of work needing to be 37 solid hours a week is so outdated. Some weeks I am extremely busy and work late, other weeks there’s not a lot going on. It’s just the way it is!
