Lighthearted thought about chewing food !!!

I'm a people watcher - yesterday out with family and friends and we sat around having picnic food. Most of us ate a crusty bread cheese roll at some point Not sure why it started but I began (discretely) watching and counting the number of chews people made before swallowing and taking their next bite. I know it makes me sound crazy!

But what I noticed made me question my own "eating process" - what would you say your average number of chews would be for a cheese roll?

PS: Nobody had false teeth or any other issues which could affect eating!

No idea, but I remember at Secondary school we were once given the homework of chewing bread for ages until it got all sugary.

Well, Horace Fletcher, who wrote the book, "Fletcherism. Or How I Became Young At Sixty" thought that you should chew food at least 32 times (once for each tooth) or more - until it became liquid and you swallowed it involuntarily.

He lived in the 19th century and Mark Twain, the Rockerfellers and Mr Kellogg of the anti masturbation cornflakes fame were all fans.

Haha - "anti-masturbation cornflakes" - I didn't believe this and had to go check what you were on about!

I really can't imagine chewing so long the food becomes liquid. Meals would take forever!!!
