I remember someone on MN calling moths 'dusty goth butterflies' years ago. I adore moths, there's some gorgeous ones in the UK, and in other parts of the world. My favourite species is the hummingbird hawk moth. I just think they're really cute. 😅
(Not my picture, I'm never quick enough.)

Yes, I like all the hawk moths, butterflies of the night, as the French say.

omega4ever · 20/08/2026 22:53

I love moths. 😁

My sewing group has stitched over 30 native moths that visit my local botanic gardens for an exhibition. The conservation team did a moth trap and had over 60 species too...which were all released after being identified.

Beautiful creatures and so varied.

Im obsessed now.

Look what came in with my washing!!

Convolvulus hawk-moth (Agrius convolvuli), it had a wingspan of about 10cm.

Safely released outside again now.

And then, later in the evening, the Orange Swift moth (Triodia sylvina).

It was attracted to the lit up keys of DH's keyboard.

Also, safely released!

Moths are amazing!

whippersnapper55 · 20/08/2026 23:00

Yes I think they're fascinating and beautiful! Saw this unusual fella in my garden the other day, he's a Jersey Tiger Moth!

Love them! Had some real beauties in our house this year which we don't normally get. We've had the windows wide open every night more often so it stands to reason.

SinuousTendrils · 20/08/2026 23:02

My dd calls them perverts!

ChateauMargaux · 20/08/2026 23:02

I was going to say .. night butterflies.. as the French do.. but someone got there first..

I love moths.. except pantry moths.. sorry, pantry moths.. well actually it's the larvae I dislike.

LancashireButterPie · 20/08/2026 23:03

Yes, DH and I set up the moth trap at least once a week in summer. There are some stunning varieties.
Canary shouldered Thorne is my favourite! It looks like one of those Easter chicks that you stick on Easter bonnets, but with wings.

PainterInPeril · 20/08/2026 23:04

Yes, I think moths are fascinating and beautiful. I'm not any good at identifying them though!😁

spiderlight · 21/08/2026 00:12

Yes, I absolutely love them. There was a beautiful one in our bathroom earlier - not sure what type though.

AllTheChicken · 21/08/2026 00:52

Love moths and most types of pollinators that I've come across so far!

mothanxiety · 21/08/2026 01:59

Yes in theory, not in my face or my hair when I'm out for my evening stroll.

angerelle · 21/08/2026 02:10

I saw some hummingbird hawk moths earlier in the week, one on some buddleia in the holiday park at Mother Ivey's Bay and one in Tesco in Padstow, bizarrely. They are amazing!

maxslice · 21/08/2026 03:28

Yes, they’re fascinating.

RigsbysCat · 21/08/2026 03:56

This buff ermine one was found in my kitchen sink the other day. I called it Donald as I was stuck by its resemblance to a certain president 😉

I do like a moth except for the one that got trapped in my ear but that's another story...

We have seen loads of Hummingbird Hawk moths in the garden this year. Amazing creatures!

Yello24 · 21/08/2026 06:02

Not really. They’re quite ugly if you ignore the wings. Am super fond of all spiders though.

Oh, that's cute! I've never seen one of them before. 😊

@RigsbysCat 😱 A moth got stuck in your ear? Donald (the moth, not the trump) is lovely. 😊

@Yello24 Disagree. I think moths are cute because they're so fat and fluffy. Butterflies are beautiful in their own right, but they're basically caterpillars with wings. I agree with you about spiders though, although my resident spiders aren't doing their jobs and catching the flies!

What did it look like?

I'm glad I'm not alone! My mum doesn't like them, one of my colleagues screamed when one went too near her at work (I didn't get close enough to see it, but it was big, so guessing a hawk moth of some kind) and there was one in the cafe I used to work in, (different place,) that was making some customers scared. That was a hummingbird hawkmoth, but it died 🥺 (probably scared to death) and it was December so it should have been long gone by then. (They migrate south in the winter.)

I like them in the garden but I can’t stand them in the house.

HurdyGurdy19 · 21/08/2026 08:53

There are some absolutely beautiful moths.

We actually had a hummingbird hawk moth inside our kitchen last night. We did manage to guide it out of the window fortunately

ThaneOfGlamis · 21/08/2026 08:55

This beauty flew into my house last month and needed rescuing. It's generally easier to take photos of moths, as they kindly pose with their wings on display. My favourite is the cinnabar moth. I try to leave a bit of ragwort growing for it whenever it pops up.

I don’t know if I like them, I don’t have a strong dislike of them though! Mostly they come in our house at night when windows are open and they are drawn to the light and are gone by the morning - they don’t bother me in the way that spiders do, they need removing IMMEDIATELY!
