Splitting the holiday cost?

SharonTheCow · 20/08/2026 21:54

I am single and childless.

My sister messaged a few weeks ago to see if I would like to go on a last minute holiday for a week in a villa. My sister, her husband and their child.

Its a 3 bed villa, 2 double bedrooms. One single.

She invited me along but said they would need the 2 double rooms as they have to lie with their son to get him to sleep so need both double bedrooms to do that.

Leaving me with the single room.

She said the villa is £X for a week and my portion would be 50%

Do you think that is fair? A family of 3 taking the 2 double rooms VS 1 person in a single room, splitting the cost evenly?

I'm not going (for other reasons) but it rubbed me the wrong way a bit.

Your sister is a CF. Glad you said no! Max I would have paid is 1/3; possibly even suggesting 1/4 given there’s 4 people and you are just one.

Raptors · 20/08/2026 22:00

You would be completely bonkers to agree to this. You must know that! She wants you to finance half of her families holiday so she can have a big villa at a minimal cost. I suspect this isn't the first time she's been a CF.

SharonTheCow · 20/08/2026 22:09

I thought so.
I tried to edit as I meant childless as in I have adult children so no children to come with me, so would be travelling alone.

Your sister has some nerve. I expect if you all eat out they’ll expect you to cough up for 50% of the bill too.

Cardhey · 20/08/2026 22:11

No way should you pay 50%… what a cf!!!

brinik · 20/08/2026 22:12

Should be split into thirds. Wouldn’t bother me to stay in a single room, both from a comfort and an understanding of their need POV, so that wouldn’t be a factor for me.

7238SM · 20/08/2026 22:13

At the very most I'd pay 1/3 because there are 3 adults and presumably a very young child. I'm glad you said no.

youalright · 20/08/2026 22:13

She basically wants you to pay for her family holiday and also want you as a babysitter absolutely not

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 20/08/2026 22:15

I'd pay 1/3, and probably feel a bit badly done to being relegated to the single bed.

They're very cheeky asking you to subsidise their holiday like that!

Mumdiva99 · 20/08/2026 22:17

Of course not. 1/3 max and maybe less as a) you had no choice in accomodation and b) you get single bed - so really there are 5 beds and you have 1 so should pay 1/5 of the villa cost. Hypothetically of course!!
What did she say when ypu declined?

OneOfEachPlease · 20/08/2026 22:19

She’s bonkers! That’s in no way fair!

arethereanyleftatall · 20/08/2026 22:19

Of course it’s not fair. Why would you even need to ask?

ShakyBake · 20/08/2026 22:20

I bet she wants you to be child minder too and cook no doubt.

I'd tred very carefully here op, very carefully indeed.

Just a passing thought, what is you relationship like with the husband? You don't think he suggested taking you as he wants all the cake and and eat it?

canuckup · 20/08/2026 22:21

Very cheeky

Bear in mind that you'd be Childminding too....

ShedShedShed · 20/08/2026 22:22

Lol, it should be â…“ that you pay.

We are a family if 3 and often go on holiday with my sister and nephew. We always split over adult. Hes now 26 and comes with us, he lays his own way.
So 4 adults and a 7 year old.we always split it and round it down, and we pay any extra for DS.

So if accommodation was like...£849, each adult pays £200, and we pay the odd £49 for DS making out total £449.

bestbefore · 20/08/2026 22:24

If you were my sister I wouldn’t take a penny for the room! Maybe suggest you pay for a meal out and pay own travel

Chocolattecoffeecup · 20/08/2026 22:32

She's very cheeky to ask you to pay half and ask for the two bigger rooms...
good you're not going! Hope you told her she was being cheeky.

Vaxtable · 21/08/2026 01:23

Your sister is not being fair. Personally it should have been split by beds so 3. You have one so you pay 1/3

MidnightMeltdown · 21/08/2026 01:25

Sorry OP, you have a CF for a sister

PrincessFiorimonde · 21/08/2026 01:55

No, that's certainly not a fair split! Hope you generally have a better relationship with your sister than your post suggests, OP.

IndestructibleRubberplants · 21/08/2026 02:07

No I don’t think it’s fair.

Crazycockerpoo · 21/08/2026 02:18

Why couldn't her partner have the single and she slept with their child?
For half the cost I would've wanted a double room . They could've rhen had the double and the single between them.. YANBU.
Least you know to think up your excuses now every year.

CoffeeBotherer · 21/08/2026 02:23

Obviously not fair. I'd wrap up a calculator for her for Christmas.

caringcarer · 21/08/2026 04:51

If you went you should pay 1/3 at most.

GoldTie · 21/08/2026 08:29

Even a third would be generous, given you’re not even being given the option of the bigger room. Glad you declined.
