How long without speaking?

If you don't work apart from family how many days/weeks can you go without talking to anyone?

Maybe half a day. I have a dog so I have to walk her even if I’m not at work that day and I pretty much always will talk to someone when I’m doing that. Then I would more likely than not be doing something else that day and there would always be some talking at some point.

I'm retired from the day job (still WFH) but I live in a tiny village where everyone knows everyone, so I think the maximum for me is about twelve hours. Although that's just a 'good morning, what's the weather forecast?' If you mean anything more meaningful, I meet a friend once a week for a good natter and one or more of my kids are liable to turn up or phone most weeks.

Plus I talk to the dog, but she's not much of a conversationalist.

I have had a few days off from work. It has really been annoying me when people have wanted to speak to me in person 😁

In reality, I could probably go for at least a couple of weeks. Sadly, I don't have enough time off work to try it out.

Workmen, work people and neighbours! I do like them, but sometimes it is nice to have peace and quiet, especially after almost a fortnight in work.

Easily a few weeks. I have a chronic illness which means I can't leave the house often and I tend to text friends rather than speak on the phone.

I barely go 20 minutes without speaking, I speak to myself a lot, even when other people are in the house.

DinoLil · 18/08/2026 18:24

I used to talk to the postie but now I have a parcel box so don't talk to them. I'm housebound atm so it can go months without talking to anyone but the dog.

Naurrr · 18/08/2026 18:28

Do you not speak to any staff in a shop/restaurant/friends?

Chitchat89 · 18/08/2026 19:05

No I shop on line. I hardly ever eat out. I only have 1 friend a few text every couple months or so.

The question is @Chitchat89 does it bother you that you can go so long without speaking to anyone and, if so, would you like to do something to change it, or are you quite content and satisfied with a fairly solitary life?

I'm ok with it. I'm not very good at socialising.
