Do you make an assumption about someone based on their name?

Sarah, lovely lady and a good friend.

Why thankyou

JackJarvisEsq · 17/08/2026 18:35

Where I’m from (Glasgow) my name implies my religion

Why? As a teacher I never judged a child by their name but possibly their parents. The child has no say in it.

They don't but they are a product of their environment. That affects them and their chances.

Sara, puts x on the end of comments on the internet.

Chapeau.

Alexa. Poor girl/woman. Most unfortunate. Likely not her parents fault either.

Thanks for that - I’ll admit I have been the butt of many jokes since Amazons listening device has been launched!

The only assumptions I make are people who repeatedly state "no offence it's just a bit of fun", know damn well they're causing offence and enjoy laughing at other people's expense.

I'm right aren't I OP?

This. ^ Pretty judgy, rude thread, mocking peoples names.

Not nice.

Amanda Holden's oldest daughter is called Alexa, and for the past 10 years the family have had to call her Lexi. (Because of the infuriating Amazon cloud based virtual assistant...)

That would have really annoyed me if I'd been virtually forced to change my child's name in this manner.

Portakalkedi · 17/08/2026 19:21

I should think it's human nature to do this, whether we like it or not.

Batties · 17/08/2026 13:32

No, you can’t.

It may not be true in all cases, but from professional experience, I can guarantee you there is a very strong correlation!

And yet not one person, yourself included, has explained how.

bloblob · 17/08/2026 19:40

A name that suggests ‘private school’ ‘privilege’ etc. could also do as much disservice to someone as a working-class name

That’s silly because you can change Alexa’s name to Echo

Sanjay / Chetan / Sachin / Rishi : Nice, polite, conscientious, well-educated, cricket-obsessed middle-class Hindu guys.

Yeah I know him too…!

Safeguard issues depending on name? You are slightly mad .

Didn't David bowie, s son change is name back io Duncan Jones once he was old enough? He couldn't bear the name his dad had given him.

Well I can’t see a Tarquin or a Peregrine as a bus driver or a dustman.
