Have you ever gone/stayed somewhere that was actually really lovely, but you just personally did not like?

I had this a couple of months ago.

I am not ungrateful, I still had a great time and I can say it was objectively what everyone else may love.

Beautiful Air B&B, well stocked with just absolutely everything you might ever need, (think 3 different types of coffee machine/percolator) large 3 storey old town house in a gorgeous old town, beautifully furnished etc etc.

I didn't dislike it but I didn't like it either😆or perhaps it just didn't suit my needs.

I live in a bungalow and am used to getting up in the night to use the loo and it's just 'there' not down a flight of stairs. More stairs to outside rather than at home, I can just open my doors and I am there. I took my dog with me and couldn't just let her out, had to get up and get dressed each time she might need a pee/take her for a walk each morning before being able to do anything else.

They'd said there was an outdoor space but there wasn't really, just a parking space and then a communal courtyard, I am used to being able to sit outside.

It was actually a bit TOO well-stocked, as in nowhere to really put any of our own things. Hard-pressed to find a place to stick your own bits of food from home as the cupboards were full of stuff. We kept trying to avoid knocking stuff off all the surfaces.

Left the host a fabulous review of course, I know this was just me!

Oh and despite how well stocked it was, it did not have a wine-stopper. I mean really Wink

You sound as though you feel you have the ideal set up at home and expected the holiday let to be a replica of your own place . Surely having a different experience is part of the fun of being away from home?

And if you have such a dislike of stairs surely you should have rented somewhere without any?

I don't have a dislike of stairs at all. I've only recently moved into my bungalow (which is a dorma, so does have stairs really).

This was a large townhouse, so flight of stairs to get to the house (kitchen, sitting room bathroom), flight of stairs to get to the bedrooms all very steep. Unusual rather than a 'normal' house. And then obviously down the flight of stairs to get back out.

I didn't book it, was a late add-on to a relative's holiday after their spouse was unexpectedly unable to go.

In fairness, I am probably fitter for it (and we did do a lot of walking on top of that).

I’ve been to places I loved that everyone else hated, it’s so strange what you click with, isn’t it? And then you go somewhere instagram perfect and everyone is oohing and aahing and you’re just nodding (but shrugging inside!!) and then you have to act like you love it because you’re lucky you got to go but secretly you’re comparing it to a very non descript, unexciting sounding holiday that took your breath away!

Dominican Republic. Last minute booking through travel agent who raved about it, I should have stuck to my guns, I knew I didn't want to go there. Very beautiful but not my kind of thing at all.

Yes, that's true! I am the same with ordinary days out. I have had the best nights out in a scruffy old pub if I like the atmosphere and been fed up having dinner in swanky venues with everyone around me feeling so relaxed and happy. And the opposite of course. It is odd. I wonder if it is some kind of ancestral or psychological thing at times.

What didn't you like about it? Admittedly I have never been but I know people who have and all have said they loved it.
