Can't sleep, horrid toothache

Anyone awake? Fed up of this pain, and just waiting now until the dentist opens so I can get an emergency appointment. Have a failed root canal that I was delaying getting pulled out because I was considering going to a private dentist and getting an implant once its removed but the cost put me off and now its suddenly got a lot worse Sad Paracetemol is doing nothing, not even tramadol helped (made it worse tbh because it makes me anxious so I don't sleep so just been lying awake in bed in pain)

So sorry to hear this. Can you try ibuprofen? And salt water gargles?

SaraHoliday · 17/08/2026 01:47

If you are in complete agony, you can call '111' and they will likely get you seen by a dentist later this morning x 💐 You will need to say the painkillers are having no effect.

Try to sleep elevated on a few pillows to reduce the pressure on your jaw.

Hello OP I am so sorry for your pain. I am awake too in agony with what I think is Swimmers’ Ear, already on antibiotics for a middle ear infection but pain is getting worse and woke me up from sleep.

I have had root canal/toothache before that’s stopped me sleeping and it’s so hard isn’t it, you feel so alone when you’re ill in the night. I hope the hours pass by quickly and morning can come soon for both of us so we can get some medical help.

Have you tried ibuprofen? Sometimes it works better than paracetamol. I’ve just taken a dose but yet to kick in. I’m trying to find something to watch or read to pass the time. I hope you get some relief soon.

Not in the UK, there's no 111 here, but if I call the dentist at 8 I'll get an appointment I'm sure. Its 4am now so I've given up on sleep, going to go to work soon and hope it distracts me.

Can't take NSAIDs unfortunately

Soak a cotton wool ball in alcohol and put it on the tooth. Saved me in France when everything was shut on a Sunday. Couple of shots of the whisky helped too!

Don't have any spirits but you did just make me think of sticking cloves in my mouth to help, going to do that.

You poor thing, there’s nothing like tooth pain! I had a root canal that then developed an abscess, it was over a weekend so I was an agony for 48+ hours. The best relief I got was from using an ice pack on my jaw, as it numbed the area a bit. That, combined with alternating Solpadine (paracetamol and codeine) Ibuprofen, and dabbing whiskey on the tooth got me through, but it was an absolutely horrid experience I never want to repeat. I hope your able to get some relief tonight x

Got a clove up against my gum now and it is helping a bit. This will teach me to put off dental care!

Ok maybe the clove wasn't such a good idea, just vomited a whole lot.

Got an appointment, actually turned out to be the tooth next to the failed root canal, so had another root canal. Was going to go back to work because can't feel any pain now thanks to the numbing but the numbing has gone into my eye so I don't feel right to drive so no work for me I guess.
