We went to Wagamama’s last night…

We had one main course each, some edamame, some cucumbers, two glasses of wine and two soft drinks.

What do you think this cost in this day and age?

Should be £20 but I know it was probably closer to £50 or 60.

In China, Japan, or HK it would cost you £10.

Fearsomelycomely · 16/08/2026 10:36

We paid £174 for five last week.

Yes I assumed this was two people having a wine each and a soft drink each.

If it was four people having a drink each (and obvs a main each) then more like £120.

That’s what I thought it was. Two people.

£90 for two people is my guess.

Trumptontown · 16/08/2026 10:38

I’m guessing at £73 for two, and £108 for four. That’s without a tip.

£20 for at least 2 mains, 2 sides and 4 drinks? Are you going back 50 years?

JacknDiane · 16/08/2026 10:38

Really, who cares?

Apparently you do, enough to read the post and comment on it.

socialdilemmawhattodo · 16/08/2026 10:40

£65 plus tip

ALevelBNotLevel · 16/08/2026 10:41

£62

clary · 16/08/2026 10:41

To some extent it really depends what wine you choose and how big a glass.

I know that in PizzaExpress for example, depending also on the menu tier, "a glass of wine" can be £6.95 and can also be £14.95. Obvs the latter is a big glass of expensive wine.

Not sure about China, but in Japan or HK you definitely can’t get that for £10.

You’ve definitely also underestimated the UK cost though. You can easily double all of those prices.

DishingTheDirt · 16/08/2026 10:43

£85 if 2 of you. Double that if 4.

lovingthebeachlife · 16/08/2026 10:44

i had lunch last week, 2 mains, 1 coke, 1 coffee & 1 side, under £40

DonewhatIcando · 16/08/2026 10:44

£140?
I often go by myself:
Ramen
Chilli squid
Edemame
Lemonade
Usually approx £35 just for me

Nope, but I've been living in Shanghai since 2012, recently back to the UK. In Shanghai a bubble tea outside the station costs me 50p and a full meal costs me from £4+ (current prices).

I went to Hong Kong on vacation and we ate at a Michelin starred dumpling place and it cost 2 of us less than £20 for multiple dishes until we couldn't eat anymore.

UK is ripping the public off. There is no justification for these prices, even other European countries don't charge this much for food.

Starrylawn · 16/08/2026 10:46

Sorry, it was 2 people. The total was £79.

It seems people expect this, but I was shocked. I chose here because we wanted something quick and reasonable. We were in and out in 40 mins. I remember when £100 got you a decent two course meal and bottle of wine at a nice restaurant!

We’re a fairly high income family and used to eat out all the time - at least twice a week- but at these prices it becomes impossible.

I think Waga is one of the more reasonably priced places

Echobelly · 16/08/2026 10:47

£75?

Then your comment about UK prices is irrelevant.

If you don’t live here, you don’t know how much anything costs. You can’t compare one country to a completely different country.

Edited

Everything has gone up.
But I never drink outside. Tbh I rarely drink.
We also rarely eat out any more as it's just not good value. I would rather travel or go to the theatre.

The difference will likely be rental costs and utilities

allthemind · 16/08/2026 10:49

I find that 'cheap' now tbh. I was expecting closer to £100. Price of so called fast food has rocketed, esp for the tier about McDonald's like wagamama, nandos, pizza express - although props to them for keeping it relatively affordable with constant vouchers and discounts.

OrangeFlower14 · 16/08/2026 10:50

£90 for 2

OnlyGreenClothes · 16/08/2026 10:50

I only eat at chain restaurants where I can use my 2 for 1 discount code now. So a pizza at one of these places becomes £10 not £20, plus a soft drink each at £3.95 makes it much more acceptable! Wagas lunch menu is OK- £15 for a main and a soft drink.

Happyjoe · 16/08/2026 10:51

Wagammama's has always been expensive imo. Shame as their veggie katsu is lovely. I make my own now.
