University as a single parent

I’m in my late twenties and a single parent to a two year old.
I’m working but it’s very much a job rather than a career and I don’t bring much in.

It’s weighing on my mind a lot a lot that I want to be in a better financial position to provide more financial security and just a better quality of life for my son and also I just want to set a better example of what life can be for him and what hard work gets you but I just don’t now where to start?

I’ve been considering going to uni for a few years now (since before I had my son) but it feels like a massive commitment. I’m in Scotland so most courses are four years and I believe I would have to do a year long foundation course first because I’ve been out of school so long.
On the upside though, as I’m in Scotland and I’ve not previously been to uni I wont have any uni fees to pay.

I don’t really have anyone I can speak to in person about it so I guess I’m just looking for a sounding board and other people’s advice and experiences?
