We'd like to do a cruise next year with 2 dcs who will be 7 and 8. Which cruise line would you recommend for kids.( not disney as its too expensive) not massively fussed on the destination just want a ship with plenty to do with the kids.

Royal Caribbean. Loads and loads to do. You won’t see your children.

MSC is fantastic, I have sailed MSC, Royal, NCL and Disney. Disney is amazing, however the cost is astronomical to your post. MSC is closet to Disney in terms of facilities and excellent kids clubs whilst balancing adults. Grandiosa is an excellent ship and considerably more cost effective than Royal, esp if you get drinks package when booking. We are eyeing up MSC World Europa as a cost effective cruise next yesr, travelling with a then nine year old and two year old. Royals is great too, but just not worth the price difference IMO. Look at MSC classes that are consistent with the Royal bigger ships. Whatever line you cruise with, its important to research shop before hand - older ships do not have the same facilities at all. Also MSC has much more port options as they are
rolling cruises, which is nice as I have picked a port on the basis of flight cost!

I’ve travelled on MSC and RC during the last two months and I found RC to be higher quality than MSC.

Royal Caribbean is great for kids that age. MSC Cruises is also worth looking at — good value and plenty of kids' clubs.
