Any tips for booking a practical driving test slot as none available?

My DC has just started having driving lessons and passed the theory. The instructor told us to go online and book a test as they are at a good stage already (we make them drive us everywhere).

We went online and there was nothing available, not one slot to even book in and change except for one slot next week which obviously is no good. It’s completely booked up till end of Jan.

Any tips or advice for getting a slot?

You need to look at 6am on a Monday morning when slots are released. There will be a big online queue of other people doing the same.

Keep checking. On the first Monday after DD passed her theory I woke early, there was nothing available, but I checked throughout the day and suddenly one popped up.

How many miles away are you looking? DS ended up about 50 miles from where we live. He drove to the test centre, which meant he was in driving mode for the test.

The slots released at 6am each Monday are new appointments for 24 weeks ahead.

Cancellations can appear at any time, but they are snapped up quickly.

There may still be commercial apps that can notify you of cancellations (if the DVSA hasn't managed to outlaw them all yet) but they will notify many other people at the same time, and slots will be snapped up quickly.

Once I get a test booked in, I understand you are allowed to change it a couple of times, to get a cancellation.

Would I be able to book it at my 2nd or 3rd choice of location, and then change the date AND the test centre location?

So, say I wanted Chelmsford, but I booked it in Stevenage in Jan, could I change it to Chelmsford in Dec if it became available as a cancellation, or do I have to keep to the same test centre?

You can move the date and test centre, or both, but can only move it to one of the nearest 3 test centres.

I will try and get him in the system, even if that means option 2 or 3 test centre then I can try and change it with a cancellation. I think the instructor will only go to our first option.

I would imagine there are quite a few cancellations as a lot of things get in the way of learning to drive.

Will he be practising in your family car? If so, he will be able to do the test in that, and have more flexibility.

Both my sons used our car. My eldest got an earlier test via a swap because one of his instructor's other customers had booked a slot for a time the instructor's car wasn't available.

Be careful when choosing alternative test centres - make sure you check which are the 3 nearest to that centre. It's possible in some areas to move to a nearby test centre but not be able to move it back, because there are 3 other nearer centres on the opposite side to you. We almost fell foul of this. We just kept checking until a cancellation turned up. It took a few weeks but we got one.

We logged on at 0600 on the dot this morning. There were 23,500 ahead of us. Just got into the system a few minutes ago and nothing left.

Why so many people? My DC said nearly everyone at the theory centre doing the test were from overseas.

Are all these tests being hogged by delivery drivers?

Am I doing something wrong here? Can you get in the queue before 0600?

I gave up with the Monday morning 6am nonsense. I just kept checking several times a day for a few weeks and snagged a cancellation. People can only move the test up to 2 weeks before, and we picked up a slot for 15 days later. When you are ready to go, just keep checking. The masses having to scramble for tests in 24 weeks time means there are more cancellations imho. We used our car - just had to buy a second mirror (less than a tenner)

Remind your MP how bad this is.

Monday morning at 6am is awful, the only defence is that it is not during work hours or when people are travelling to and from work/school (like doctors at 8am).

It’s an absolute pain in the arse, it really is. There just aren’t enough tests, even getting one for twenty four weeks in advance is difficult. My DD’s instructor only worked three days a week so getting a test on a day and time he was available was an extra complication so she ended up having to do it in my car. My oldest failed twice and then you have to do it all again! Another twenty four weeks or trying to get a cancellation. The whole getting a cancellation took over my whole life!

His instructor should have advised him better. He should have booked his test 6 months ago. Everyone knows there is a backlog. It started during Covid, and was exacerbated by bot bookings. My only advice is to keep trying.

There are often cancellations for three days before because that’s the past time you can change the test date. So people leave it until then to decide so if he’s actually ready then that’s a possibility.

Be prepared for your booked test to be cancelled on the day or a couple of days before . It has happened to my son twice and he has now been given a date in November. It’s not fair on people taking days off work/college or their instructors. They used to have an extra examiner on duty in case one was sick or similar but not nowadays it seems. The whole system is a shambles !

When my dd went to get test a girl arrived a minute after her and she was told that the examiner had gone home sick so her test was cancelled.

Logging on at 6 am is too late. You have to log on around 0530-0540 to be told it’s too early, however you remain in the queue and so when it opens you should only have a couple of hundred people in front and generally will get lucky. Z I tried to log on at random times for a couple of weeks - impossible. Do the 0540 get up

I don't think delivery drivers are the problem. Why would they be able to hog the tests ahead of anyone else? Basically there's a big back log and not enough examiners. It's a pain in the arse. As others have said you just have to keep trying until you get something.

This! Everyone is in the same boat. I logged on a 5am and got a test (it held me in queue for an hour). Speak to your instructor on the top three test centres you should choose from

I agree, need to log on about 5.40. Also I've had it open on chrome, Google on PC and phone but spaced out logging on. If you log on too early, and get to the front of the queue before 6, you have to start again.

We got both of our ds’s to take the theory test as soon as they turned 17 and then booked the practical test booked as soon as they’d passed that. Meant they were both fully fledged drivers within 7 months of turning 17.

Booking a driving test slot is a full time job right now. It's totally rubbish. I booked for my ds because he works on a building site and I work at a desk. I must have checked a thousand times before finally getting a suitable cancellation. The website kept banning me as a bot, I logged in so often.

I would skip the Monday morning unless you log on at 5.40am and just keep checking and checking at all random times of the day for cancellation slots. I got ds's at 4pm on a Tuesday. Actually jumped up and down in my chair, my colleagues cheered when I said I'd got one. Total nightmare.

If he's using your car you have more flexibility, that's good. And if he's really ready you might get something at short notice, like 3 days or something. But finding a slot for 6 weeks in advance is almost impossible nowadays. It's an absolute nightmare pretty much all over the country.

Just keep trying every day at random times, one will come up. No point getting one that isn’t in your closest area. Just hold out and keep trying. It took me a few weeks of checking and then suddenly I was able to book one, very far in advance. I had to change it a few weeks ago, this time I was able to book a replacement immediately only 6 weeks later than the original one.

I've just been through all this, having passed my test a few weeks ago (at the age of 35..!) It is a complete and utter nightmare and I nearly gave up on the whole thing several times due to how hard it was to book a test.

I never had any luck with the 6am thing, instead I just logged on at totally random times in the day and managed to grab cancellations. I failed my first test in Feb and then had to wait 5 months for a second as they had tightened up the rules on changing tests and literally no cancellations were showing at all, I think people are more cautious about changing their tests now that you can only do it twice. My instructor reckoned that things will improve with test availability due to the booking rule changes but that it won't be an instant fix. Best of luck to your DC! It will be worth the stress eventually but it's not a fun process at all these days!
