Spam call pretending to be from Amazon? Be vigilant.

I just had a call from a UK mobile, they said they’re from Amazon and need to check how I’ve paid for my last order. It rang some alarm bells because there was always a delay between me saying anything and their replies, and a long pause after I answered the call. When I said I’ll call them back on the Amazon customer service number, they hung up. Just posting here to warn others, in case it is a phishing attempt and they’re after credit card details.

I had one a few months back where an 'Amazon' caller told me someone had tried to buy an iPad on my account.
He said to secure my account he was going to send over an OPT code and asked me to read it out to him. Oh how I laughed, then told him to fuck off.

Imagine all those other poor people who genuinely believe this and hand over their details. Scammers are the lowest.

DH gets these. He doesn't have an Amazon account.

I got one yesterday, from 'Jennifer' from Amazon security. Lots of delay on the line, just left the phone off the hook till she'd gone in the hope it costs them money.

I had one Wednesday, telling me someone was trying to purchase an iPhone using my Amazon account. The caller told me they would send me a WhatsApp message with a security code that I should repeat back. I told them I would not be doing that. They hung up. I did receive a WhatsApp message with a code ( it looked genuine) I just deleted it.

Yes had the Amazon one asking me to confirm my bank details as looked like someone was trying to hack my account!
These scammers make me so angry

I have something similar probably once a week, and I find it particularly annoying as the number they call from looks like a genuine mobile number and for some reason my phone/watch doesn’t pick it up as suspected spam so I answer.

It’s always that they’re calling to say an iPad or iPhone has been ordered on my account and they want to check that’s correct. I just say yes that’s right and then enjoy their momentary nonplussed reaction before I’m cut off!

I get that one a lot

Just block unknown numbers, anything actually important will leave a message. 99% of the calls I get are scam calls.

I got one and DH said loudly Give the police a ring it is a scam. Amazingly they have not rung since. I imagine they have put our number on a list of Avoid this number!

I got one that rather worryingly identified a delivery that WAS on its way to me! They were able to tell me its tracking number.

i don’t know if that means they’ve hacked the courier or if he’s in on it…

I realised in time, but only just! Because the delivery was running late it all sounded fairly plausible until they started sending me OTPs.

Phewmcgrew · 16/08/2026 08:50

What is the point of them sending the code over WhatsApp?

Titaniasdream · 16/08/2026 09:06

I get these. I have an Amazon account, but not linked to the number they call me on. Last time I pointed out that it was an extremely obvious scam and the guy on the end of the line started shouting "It isn't a scam! When did I say it was a scam? I never said that!" Well, no, you wouldn't, would you. Fool.

CocoPlum · 16/08/2026 09:09

Apparently the code you are sent is from amazon BUT it's one to confirm you are the person logging in - so they pretend to be amazon while trying to get in and use the genuine OTP to gain access to your account.

What is the point of them sending the code over WhatsApp?

Yes they try to access your account and most of the time you are sent an OTP code as security. So they get so far and need you to confirm the OTP code for them to breach the security. As soon as they are in they change all security info so only they have access. Never give anyone your OTP.
