Is anyone else is the south-east not having the summer they planned due to the heatwave ?

We live in the surrey and we usually have picnics, Bike rides, meeting up with friends in the park etc . I will sometimes send my daughter to a summer camp but it's just been to hot for all this.
We cant even fill the pool up due to hosepipe ban.

We went to an outdoor inflatable water park (Thorpe lakes) Yesterday morning and the kids were still boiling. We've been watching A LOT of tv, Hiding indoors etc. It was 37c at one point

We managed to go to Norfolk for a few days, and weather was about 10c cooler then surrey, I hadn't felt this normal for what feels like months!!

For the first time for a long time we are having a proper summer so whatever the temperature, I am not complaining!!!

SheilaFentiman · 15/08/2026 08:11

Definitely - we have a lovey garden but its cooler to be indoors!

I usually take my autistic adult son out for trips to London on trains and buses and to different attractions, but have not the inclination to do this because of the heat. He keeps saying he is tired, as am I and can’t wait to get home to a cool fan after about half an hour outside. It is unbearable and tiring.

No, I have loved it. Running in the early mornings, swimming regularly, sitting in the garden. I absolutely adore this weather. Not had any issues sleeping etc - no fans purchased.

I do appreciate this comes at a huge cost to the planet and that is awful. On a local level, I love it. On a global scale, not so much.

WhatNoRaisins · 15/08/2026 08:45

This is going to sound petty but I've really missed making daisy chains with the kids.

I'm lucky to live somewhere where it's not been constant high temperature for months because on those days we've managed a few hours outside early in the morning but after that it's indoors with the curtains closed and too much screen time.

Yep life has been on hold for months now.
I love being outside and gardening that's been restricted to evenings and even then I not always felt well enough.
I have young children and usually we would be doing lots of bike rides park visits atleast one bigger day out. We haven't done a day out. We've saved our energy for the trip to the dentist. Went to the park once for 40 mins and they were too hot. Its been rubbish for us.

I've found the heat so intense this year almost painful to be out in. Like I've immediately got sunburn the moment I step out in it. I haven't got sunburnt once but the intensity feels that way. We have a big pool (filled in april ) but haven't used it as much as previous years because it's been too hot. We had to turn the heater off it got to bath like temperature which was no relief at all.

I am someone who really feels the cold so I do appreciate it being a nice consistent warmth but this has been a exhausting relentless heat.

I have been alot less active than normal. I’ve found it too hard to exercise in this heat and that’s had a knock on effect on my well
being.
Ive cancelled a fair few things with friends when it’s been plus 34 degrees because I’m either at the end of a long hot work day (I work outdoors) or it’s going to be murder to get there on public transport.
And work itself has been difficult.

so yes-it’s certainly had a negative impact on my life overall

For me I had planned lots of jobs to do outside and it’s been too hot . I’m hoping it cools into September

I was going to break up our 3 old wooden sheds and replace with composite ones. It can wait until the weather turns. The one that holds the firewood is hotter than hell ( and I expect the spiders are unbelievably huge). We went to St Andrews 2 weeks ago. Was beautiful. Poured with rain on our last day. So nice. I have adapted my summer plans especially with the grandchildren ( 2 and 4 . Have them Monday every week and Tuesday too in the summer) but nothing has been cancelled, just done earlier or in somewhere with aircon

NorthernDancer · 15/08/2026 09:37

I have metabolic issues and cannot handle the heat at all. Result? Utter disabling depression. I have done nothing but sit in the house since May. When it finally stops, it will have been a complete waste of all that time.

To make it worse, I am mostly at home alone, because DH loves it and just doesn't understand.

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 15/08/2026 09:38

I’m in Scotland so it’s not as bad, but it has changed my plans a bit. Also I’ve had a bit of a weird thing this summer with work. I’m a maths tutor and normally most people don’t book summer lessons (apart from kids who are really behind, and some of my home ed kids) but this summer almost everyone has kept their kids on over summer. Good for my wallet, but I feel it’s a bit mean - most of the poor kids don’t really want to be doing maths in the holidays. I’ve cancelled some lessons when it’s been really hot. I love maths, but when it’s this hot even I don’t want to do it and I feel bad inflicting it on kids.

No my DC went on their holiday with friends and we went on our family holiday and flew to Italy as well.

damekindness · 15/08/2026 09:39

I’m two weeks into retirement and all I’ve done is sit motionless in front of a fan pausing only to scratch insect bites that look like they were made by a small terrier. All my post work life structure plans remained in limbo

Cggv · 15/08/2026 09:40

We live in London so have our fans at home and a Dyson cooler. DC have loved London in the sun. All they need (outdoors) is a hat and water.

itsgettingweird · 15/08/2026 09:53

I’m south coast (central) and coastal (10 mins drive).

We decided not to book to go away this year as the weather has been as good here and we go to the beach, lido etc all within 10 minutes of home.
We did book a day out this Tuesday which was rather warm 😂 but we would do a theme park on holiday in same heat (just less humidity)

Most days here are between 28-32° so perfectly manageable.

We are having to manage it differently though as ds has a neuromuscular condition which means his body doesn’t deal with temperature regulation well.

But we have to manage that on holiday anyway.

Thingsthatgo · 15/08/2026 09:58

I’m south east. It hasn’t felt too bad for me. We have moved sports like tennis to early morning or evening time, but otherwise carried on as usual. Our old house keeps cool, and there’s always a nice breeze by the sea. I have bought a UV umbrella for walking in the sunshine, which helps protect my very pale skin.

Fallstar · 15/08/2026 11:19

While I am very concerned about the global issues that are contributing to climate change, on a personal level I love the heat. I find it energises me and I enjoy being active in it. Weird I know, but I have circulation issues that improve hugely in the hot weather.
A couple of the sticky nights have been a bit uncomfortable, though, but nothing a fan doesn't relieve.
