Are you not having the summer you planned due to the excessive heat ?

Is anyone else is the south-east not having the summer they planned due to the heatwave ?

We live in the surrey and we usually have picnics, Bike rides, meeting up with friends in the park etc . I will sometimes send my daughter to a summer camp but it's just been to hot for all this.
We cant even fill the pool up due to hosepipe ban.

We went to an outdoor inflatable water park (Thorpe lakes) Yesterday morning and the kids were still boiling. We've been watching A LOT of tv, Hiding indoors etc. It was 37c at one point

We managed to go to Norfolk for a few days, and weather was about 10c cooler then surrey, I hadn't felt this normal for what feels like months!!

I'm in the south west and it has been way too hot for me to do anything. Since June, I have visited family (once) and gone out for the day with a friend (once). Those were on rare days when the temperature was less than 25 degrees. Most days I go out at 6.30 am for a walk, and then hide in the house for the rest of the day. Luckily I work from home.

aintnothinbutagstring · 14/08/2026 17:12

Perhaps a bit more indoor time but that could be due to having teens who are hard to get outside. I sort of feel acclimatised to it now due to working in high classroom temperatures last few weeks of term (teacher). Then went abroad where it was mid 30s and did a lot of walking around during that so perhaps built up some resilience. I feel cold if it drops down to high 20s 😄

For me I had planned lots of jobs to do outside and it’s been too hot . I’m hoping it cools into September

Yes . We spend a lot of time on the allotment in summer. But it’s just too hot , and when we do go an hours work leaves us dripping wet and feeling funny.

we spent a week in Scotland which was lovely temp (I don’t think they allow sunshine over the boarder ?😉)

watched too much Netflix with the curtains closed tbh it’s a bit embarrassing!

Meredusoleil · 14/08/2026 17:16

Totally agree with you OP 🥵

Actually, Thorpe Lakes was somewhere we wanted to go back to this summer (only went for the first time last summer). But I remember there wasn't a lot of shade tbh!

Pinkgin00 · 14/08/2026 17:16

I am loving this summer, it has been so much easier keeping my son entertained in dry warm weather, how a summer should be. The odd activity has been cancelled due to hot weather, but overall it has been great and i am not ready for autumn yet. We do live in the North West though , so temperatures will be more manageable.

zurigo · 14/08/2026 17:19

I've done barely any running and usually I love going for a run on bright, sunny summer mornings. But when it's already roasting at 7am - no thanks Sad

I'm fatter and more unfit this summer than I had planned to be, for sure.

birdysong · 14/08/2026 17:20

We are also in the south and have been indoors for much of the day because we have a puppy who cant be left alone and its too hot to take them out in the day

TreesAtSea · 14/08/2026 17:23

Yes, for me it's just one very long waiting game until temperatures drop. I usually love summer but anything above 25 degrees is way too much for me. I'm on the south coast and at times it's been up to 36 degrees in the shade. My flat is like a greenhouse and going out isn't much different.

MezeAndNibbles · 14/08/2026 17:24

Absolutely!
I had so many plans for the summer.
I recently retired, so was looking forward to a summer of sailing, outdoor holidays and entertaining. None of those things have happened. I needed to tidy up the garden before inviting people round. Hasn’t happened. Outdoor pursuits haven’t happened either. It’s too bloody hot to go cycling or hiking and I’d get burnt to a crisp if I went sailing.
I’m usually a summer person, but this year has been too hot.

malloryknox123 · 14/08/2026 17:25

No. I am housebound and dripping with sweat, I can’t breathe or think straight. Normal tasks like changing sheets or washing dishes need to be prepared for hours in advance

MrsTrellisOgleddCymru · 14/08/2026 17:26

I had planned on going on long dog walks, visiting different castles/stately homes/gardens and going camping. Instead this extreme heat has had my days go back to front! The dog and I have had some lovely long walks at 3am! Pity the aforementioned places don't open overnight! Confused

Pinkbox · 14/08/2026 17:27

Yes me. I was hoping to do all sorts with my enforced downtime between being made redundant and my new job starting - but I’ve mostly been housebound carrying my fan from room to room. Apparently the new office has aircon, yippee!

EmeraldRoulette · 14/08/2026 17:33

Yes, it's infuriating

I had so many plans

It's still about 36° outside.

I have never known time go this slowly - it's insane

it's interesting to see people to find talking about it on MN. Usually these threads are dominated by those of us living in boiling hot new builds

I am quite puzzled at how much older houses seem to be holding the heat though. I would've thought at least having windows at front and back would help.

it's not possible to actually catch up with the things that I want to do So I'm not quite sure how to plan or what's going to happen.

freddofrogsareyum · 14/08/2026 19:22

Yes I am hating this weather. As a teacher my summer is usually made up of some work then sorting all the jobs I never have time to do in term time - diy, painting, reorganising the attic and garage and also doing a few nice day trips with the kids like going up to London. I can’t do any of these things in this heat. I can’t sleep properly and feel so hot and tired during the day, my kids are spending their summer playing video games and watching tv. My house is a sauna and we can’t even have the windows open as we have a sick cat who is under house arrest.

I am so miserable and dh is not even sympathetic, he has half his week in an air con office and the other few days work from home but this heat doesn’t seem to bother him as much.

we can’t afford to buy an air con unit (and they are all sold out)

I am seriously considering moving up North/scotland if it is going to be like this every year.

squirrelchops2 · 14/08/2026 19:24

Not changed anything really. Worked like normal. Just amended dog walking times.

MrsKateColumbo · 14/08/2026 19:29

Whilst I dont think the hot weather is good in general it has been quite nice for me. I have poor circulation so am always freezing, this summer I have felt "just right" and have really enjoyed it. Blush

The only time I was properly too hot was dubai In August

Im in Scotland, went a lovely walk today with just a light jacket on.

SkyBeau · 14/08/2026 19:51

I love the hot weather. I have not used a fan. No need to go abroard for a hot summer holiday.

Yeah, one of my neighbours is like this
38° and she can just do all her normal stuff. Most of us in the building are really struggling. We actually told her to delay a dog walk one night because it was about 7 pm and the dog was literally digging his heels in. Most people are going about 10 pm.

I haven't worn a jacket since May

I miss jackets

I have a particularly nice summer jacket that I got to wear a few times last year and no times this year. I didn't take it up north with me on holiday because it doesn't travel well.

IlikethoseBalenciagas · 14/08/2026 19:57

My running is a bit crap. I've dragged myself through slowly, with a water bottle but I'm looking forward to cooler temps.

marriednotdead · 14/08/2026 20:01

I'm a big fan of summer usually but it's been pretty relentless and I'm missing sitting in green spaces with a picnic. I'm really lucky that my commute is air conditioned as is my place of work. Nothing is getting done housework wise!

Eviebeans · 14/08/2026 20:01

Have been looking after grandchildren during holidays. Have spent much less money than usual as we have been out less than we usually would
strangely enough the time seems to have passed really quickly

Eviebeans · 14/08/2026 20:03

We have been out locally for a couple of hours each day but it has been so hot that they are happy to come home after that
