Are you not having the summer you planned due to the excessive heat ?

Is anyone else is the south-east not having the summer they planned due to the heatwave ?

We live in the surrey and we usually have picnics, Bike rides, meeting up with friends in the park etc . I will sometimes send my daughter to a summer camp but it's just been to hot for all this.
We cant even fill the pool up due to hosepipe ban.

We went to an outdoor inflatable water park (Thorpe lakes) Yesterday morning and the kids were still boiling. We've been watching A LOT of tv, Hiding indoors etc. It was 37c at one point

We managed to go to Norfolk for a few days, and weather was about 10c cooler then surrey, I hadn't felt this normal for what feels like months!!

Yes it's been absoultly awful ! Nothing done been sheltering in place

SkyBeau · 14/08/2026 20:10

I love the hot weather.

tsmainsqueeze · 14/08/2026 20:11

I am hating it now, air con makes work bearable but home which is usually comfortable in hot weather isn't in this heat.
I am working a lot of overtime and by the time i'm home i am too knackered to clean to my usual standard as it's just too hot.
I haven't gone out much and haven't even sat in the garden or my summer house which -you guessed it is too hot !
I long for a proper nights sleep wrapped up in my duvet but can't remember when i last had a good nights sleep.
Most of my team at work are moaning about the same things.
I am certainly beginning to think of how to manage this type of heat if this is going to be the norm.
Its a big chunk of time to let it pass you by because the heat makes you so debilitated.

The early mornings are light and the late evenings are light. The weather is hot. It's the perfect summer. Heatwave, what heatwave? The weather is perfect. I feel like i am on holiday abroard.

Summerbean · 14/08/2026 20:20

I have still been going to the gym as it's air conditioned but this weather has changed my usually active life for the worse. I haven’t been doing as many long dog walks, trips to the allotment or bike rides and can't wait for autumn- I don't mind the rain!

Yeah, I don't really like the gym anymore, but I actually wish I had joined because it could have been useful exercise and an air-conditioned space

It's been such a dead loss. I kind of can't get my head around it. I haven't really been thinking straight since we first had 35° on the 22nd of May or whatever it was and I thought I'm away twice (up north that was good luck) so I didn't really want to spend a bunch of extra money.

When I look at what a waste it's been and how slowly the time has gone, I realise I made the wrong decision.

Even just the rest of August looks like an interminably long time. It's just unthinkable to not enjoy summer.

WatchingTheStarsFromMyHammock · 14/08/2026 20:25

No, I am not having the summer I would usually. Even though I am managing and coping fine, sleeping well, I have to walk at 6am and I spent most of my time under the parasol in the garden. I'm south Midlands so not even all that south, but we have been having it just as hot and dry.

Usually I would be doing lots of day hikes, days out at National Trust properties, going for picnics, going to the park to play rounders or cricket, but most of the time the biggest part of the day is spent in the shade.

We often feel like summer has passed us by when it's very wet, but I am starting to feel a bit like that about the heat. Yes it's lovely to have sunshine, but what's the point when it's too hot to be active.

I am off north soon for a week away, where it might even rain and it's going to be a chilly 16c. I mean, that's 20c lower than what it was yesterday, which is bonkers when you think about it. I feel like I have forgotten how to dress for that sort of weather because I have been living in little shorts and t shirts. I would happily settle for a nice 23c. Nice and warm, but you can still do stuff.

Looking forward to a trip to the SW in September when hopefully it's just normal summer nice weather not a heatwave!

I’m having a much better one than anticipated! Have loved the consistent hot weather for a change. Weekends spent BBQing/hosting friends without the threat of rain, picnics, hiking, days out with the kids, paddling pool out all the time, it’s been fabulous. Normally I find summer too cold and then I’m depressed in winter having not had a proper summer but hopefully this year it will be more manageable as we’ve had a good summer. I do feel very bad for all the wildlife suffering due to the drought though, leaving as much water out in our garden as possible.

SkyBeau · 14/08/2026 20:34

The weather is beautiful. No complaints. 😀

Shinyhappyapple · 14/08/2026 20:37

I feel that I’ve been very lucky as I’ve had two weeks away, to the Lake District early July and to South Devon this last week. Both weeks weather at my holiday destination was in the low-mid twenties with a max one day of 27°, as opposed to the 35° at home . Just a lucky coincidence.

YouSawBrigadoon · 14/08/2026 20:39

Also in Surrey. We’ve had a phenomenal summer so far because of the weather.

The sort of summer we dream about when we’re getting the garden straight in spring and planting up pots and borders. We’ve eaten lunches and dinners outside for weeks on end, had countless glorious evenings in the garden with friends, the barbecue has never been used so much.

Likeiloveyou · 14/08/2026 20:41

I’m loving it as I don’t feel too hot at all. We’re all different!

SkyBeau · 14/08/2026 20:42

I am packing my rucksack to go to Margate beach this week. ⛱️☀️🌞 It is about an hour and a half away from where i live. Weather is good. 😀

Cobrakainerd · 14/08/2026 20:48

I love it..but..
I haven't been able to do things with DH( sensitive to heat due to illness) and the dog, Day trips, walks etc
Im no longer 10 and able to go out to play like I did in 1976. Going to work, doing a physically demanding job whilst sweating like its a Olympic sport is no fun. I want to be young, free and adventurous not a very nearly 'old', responsible adult!

SkyLark79 · 14/08/2026 20:48

we usually love taking the dog out on long walks in pretty places, but I’ve been walking him before the teens are even awake. Rubbish!

concertinacornflake · 14/08/2026 20:51

We've changed plans due to the heat.

I watched a news item about how badly it's affected businesses, as people have avoided going out.

hattie43 · 15/08/2026 07:23

I’m as far south as you can get and I feel it’s a mixed bag . I absolutely have loved the certainty of hot dry weather , not looking out seeing if I need a jumper or mac before going out . But the extreme 28+ has really hindered my summer because I feel I’ve spent too long having to hide from it .I was under the trees in a hammock and it was 36 , unheard of . I haven’t managed any of the jobs I wanted to do , sort the garden , fencing , clear out the barn , housework has barely been done other than the absolute essentials . My dogs have really struggled to the point I’ve had AC fitted and it’s been transformational for all of us but I really don’t want to spend my summer indoors , I am most comfortable about 24/25 where it’s nice and warm but you can still do things .

timtamsarebetterthanpenguins · 15/08/2026 07:36

No, but we’re in Cumbria and it’s just been normal summer temperatures here. As a dog walker I’ve had to bring more walks forward than normal but otherwise that’s about it.

Lulu1919 · 15/08/2026 07:44

Im à TA - summer off - spent more time indoors then I ever would !!!

Doodledoggle · 15/08/2026 07:47

I was off school for 5 weeks (school office job).

Normally I sort the shed, declutter, trips. To the tip, weeding.

This summer I've done my 10k steps and a workout by 8am every day and then spent most of the day napping or reading or cooking indoors.

I do love the heat (I know that there are a lot of negative things that have happened but specifically my body and the sunshine is happy) but I have felt more lethargic and tired and haven't slept for more than 6hrs at night since early June.

Looking forward to sleeping with the windows and blinds shut in september.

The smell in the air is lovely though from the heat. (except when the wildfire smoke drifts in)

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 15/08/2026 07:49

Honestly except Thursday and Friday this week which were hot, DC seem completely acclimatised to it now. We’ve had much more BBQ’s, park meet ups, cycles with friends etc as you can guarantee good weather, so it’s been easy to make plans and stick to them.

Weve had our usual summer visitors as neither of us are originally from the SE, they’ve all loved it. Hosting has also been much easier; kids and meals in the garden, much less stressful than hosting can sometimes be.

PatioDwellers · 15/08/2026 07:55

In the north west by the beach so it’s just been lovely rather than too hot. The really hot couple of weeks we got we were in the Lake District with the dog and had to change our plans to lake walks rather than hills. Still lovely though.

DyslexicPoster · 15/08/2026 07:56

No. I'm in your neck of the woods OP and Bern out and busy. Went to a watermark yesterday with the kids. Took a golf umbrella and swam. Been walking along the coast on some of the hottest days. Being outside is actually cooler than indoors. Factor 50, cover up. It's been lovely

EatMoreChocolate44 · 15/08/2026 07:56

I'm in Northern Ireland and our weather has been good. Normally I'm jealous of all the warmer sunnier weather in the south of England whereas this year we have had mostly mild, warm and dry weather but still mostly comfortable (a bit muggy at times and some rain here and there). I do remember June being v warm though and it was v hot in school (I'm a teacher). That said our temperatures never got up to the crazy temperatures in parts of England. Climate change is concerning.

xB1991x · 15/08/2026 08:03

I've got two young children and they just cant cope in the heat. Previous summer holidays we've spent so much time in the garden but this year we are inside so much more when temps go above 30. Quite sad really because they love running around in paddling pools and the spraying water matt things. The next 2 weeks before they start reception are going to be cooler but still a hose pipe ban.

Im hoping next summer is back to normal
