School uniform

I accept not everyone will feel the same with my issue here and I respect that.

Last night after work I popped into my local supermarket. I happened to be walking behind a girl aged around 14 although looked older. She was still in school uniform with shirt tie etc. Her skirt was the black slinky swirly style & was so short it looked more like a tiny skirt attached to bikini bottoms, not the type older women wear. She looked great with model like legs but at the same time I can't believe schools accept this mode of dress in the classroom. There are people who say young girls should feel free to dress as they wish without judgement. I agree if going out for the evening your only young once & nobody has a right to judge.

As far as school uniform is concerned & before I'm being accused of being a pearl clutcher etc I have no issue with saying I definitely do judge. I believe parents & teachers should ban this type of skirt in the classroom.

Might've been her PE skirt?

ShetlandishMum · 14/08/2026 13:15

Leave it to schools to manage not random people in a supermarket.

NameChangeScot · 14/08/2026 13:16

What was the issue exactly? How does the length of skirt impact on her learning?

Or are you more worried about her being a distraction to others (males)?

'with model like legs' so if she didn't have legs like a middle she shouldnt wear the skirt?

🤦🤦🤦

School uniform in mid-August?

That’s what I thought. I thought most schools are on their holidays.

Is Scotland back at school now?

Most of Scotland is back at school.

Although mine aren’t back till the 20th

AgnesMcDoo · 14/08/2026 13:36

As for the skirt length it wouldn’t be officially allowed at our school but most of them hitch theory skirts up when they leave the premises.

teenage girls have always done this

mondaytosunday · 14/08/2026 13:38

Many schools have a length rule. But girls roll the waistband up, especially once off school grounds.

Busybookworm · 14/08/2026 13:38

Oh, I knew Scottish schools went back earlier but I didn’t realise it was as soon as that. Every day’s a school day, ha ha! Sorry for doubting you OP.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 14/08/2026 13:40

She wasn’t in school, she was in a shop, she could have rolled it up when meeting friends after school, or it could have been a PE skirt. But mostly there’s no need for you to be looking and judging this girl when she’s just in a shop minding her own business.

This is the point of the year that my best mates kids grumble about mine “still” being off.

which balances up the moans I get at the end of June when her kids are “already” off 😂

Assuming this actually happened, in somewhere where schools have gone back and have uniform (Scotland, NI):
1 - she wasn’t at school, she was at the supermarket.
2- DD’s school doesn’t “allow” short skirts either. Despite the uniform skirt having a coloured waistband and a badge on the hip, to discourage girls from rolling their skirts up, they roll their skirts up.
3 - Have you ever successfully tried to tell a teenage girl not to do something? Well try telling several hundred of them!
4 - might have been PE kit?
5 - So what? If it distracts people, that’s a them problem.

Not where I live, schools are back. FWI it was not a pe skirt.

How do you know it's not a PE skirt?

And also, this doesn't make sense...

I happened to be walking behind a girl aged around 14 although looked older.

If you don't know she even is 14, how can you say she looks older? 😳

OP, you will find that if you abolish uniform completely, students will rock up in jeans, t-shirts, hoodies etc. There might be an initial frenzy of clothes madness, but it will settle. Look at other countries.

Want kids to dress better? Get over the British uniform obsession.

WhatAMarvelousTune · 14/08/2026 14:16

Are you a teacher? Or this girl’s parent? Why does it matter what this teen girl is wearing in a shop?

And your comment about school’s should ban it - I’d bet money that the school does specify a skirt length.

aged around 14 although looked older

So how do you know she was 14?

Hillwalking365 · 14/08/2026 14:22

Loads of girls dress like this at my daughter’s High School. Even girls in S1. I collect my daughter from school and there isn’t a day when you don’t get a flash of someone’s knickers. I really don’t get why they want to dress this way. But it seems to be the social norm. My girls thankfully prefer trousers!

I agree but, she might not care! We also don’t know that she’s flashing her bum cheeks at teachers, because no one on here has seen her at school. Her skirt might have been rolled up in the supermarket, and rolled down at school.

WhatsAWeekend · 14/08/2026 14:40

Skirts had to be knee length at my children’s school and had to remain so, even outside school.
Girls were given detention if they were seen not dressed according to the school rules wherever they happened to be

So it depends what the school rules are. Perhaps they are only relevant on school grounds

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 14/08/2026 15:05

My DD and her friends all roll them up but they wear really long socks. The PE skort is very short but again with long socks
