Firstly I appreciate this is not the same for the rest of the country

but we’ve had it horrific here (London). I’ve never felt so shit in my life as I have for the last 10 weeks. I’ve spent between £250-350 a month on electricity (portable air conditioners). I’ve felt anxious, headachy, it’s FUCKED with my peri menopause (brain fog, no words, cognitive decline). I’ve felt tearful and as if it would go on forever. There are moments where I’ve thought I can’t take another moment of this. My sleep is proper fucked.

level I can. Air conditioners only when necessary, above 26 inside (DH has long Covid so literally throws up in heat). His asthma is exacerbated. The dogs have had the shittest summer. I’ve had a couple of rescues that can’t go out about 22 degrees. I reckon they’ve been walked briefly 3 times a week. We deliberately went away on a cheap caravan holiday twice just so they could smile. There were endless days I couldn’t work as too hot in my home office and clients cancelled.

I cannot wait til Saturday.

I hope for solidarity from others. I want to wear a fucking hoodie again. I’ve spent every day sat around in my underwear inside for vast stretches of the day. This is not sexy.

I had to go to the shop a few minutes ago, it's 35 degrees and unbearable, apparently a bit of rain on Monday 🤞

I have become really depressed. I smiled at something yesterday and dh said it was the first time in ages! I had some sleep last night though , so might be that !

Not where I live. There was a winter around then where you could see snow on a high point of the Ashdown Forest, about 20 miles from me, but we didn't get any here. I suppose there could have been a dusting of it in the night that had disappeared by the time I got up, but there certainly wasn't any that settled on the roads or gardens.

I'm only 6 miles from the coast, I don't know if that makes a difference.

Don't get your hopes up. They've changed their minds AGAIN about rain.I know how you feel OP as I also live in the "hasn't rained since 15th June" area of UK ( apart from half an hour on 5th August!)
But! It will be winter soon so try to be calm; its Britain, we always have a longer winter than summer!

I love the heat! I’m in London and love walking out and feeling that warmth at all times of the day and night. I do not like the fires and worry for the wildlife though.

When I was at primary school in the 70s we made a weather chart in the summer term, where we recorded temperature, rainfall etc every day. Our teacher said we should have the temperature gauge going up to 21 degrees as it was so unlikely to go above 21 by the end of term in July… obviously we then had the summer of 1976 but up until then mid 20s was considered absolutely scorching

This summer has been awful. It was 35 degrees where i live yesterday. I honestly felt as though i was cooking alive. It is 28 degrees now and it is going to be 20 degrees next week.

This comment is a bit daft. I love warm weather so the heat we’ve had this summer hasn’t bothered me and I’ve really enjoyed being constantly barefoot, sitting outside in the evenings etc particularly after the absolutely miserable winter we had this year.

At the same time I have watched with concern the wildfires in France and the drought and thought about climate change a lot.

Its possible for to feel both things at the same time.

Because I'm old, I can remember the bitter winter of 62/63, when it snowed on Boxing Day and there were still bits of snow on the ground in early March. My early 20s niece found this incomprehensible, she looked at me like I was talking about the Ice Age or something.

We lived in a cold, draughty flat with an outdoor lav, and the water in the cistern and the bowl froze solid. My dad came home one day with some arcane bit of kit called a Tilley stove that ran on paraffin, and put that out in the toilet. It gave out just enough heat to stop the water from freezing up once he'd thawed it out.

My late mum spoke about the bad winter of 62/3 and how it went on and on. Then it was a nice summer apparently, but nothing like this.
I loved my childhood summers of rain and more rain ( pre and even after 76)

There are countries that use desalinated sea water, mainly in the Middle East, I believe.

I suspect building the plants to desalinate the water requires significant investment though. It's almost certainly only worth it if really hot weather becomes the norm.

I do question why all our water has to be treated until it's fit to drink though. It seems crazy to go to all that expense and effort just to use it to flush toilets and wash clothes.
