It’s over tomorrow, the heat is over for another year

Firstly I appreciate this is not the same for the rest of the country

but we’ve had it horrific here (London). I’ve never felt so shit in my life as I have for the last 10 weeks. I’ve spent between £250-350 a month on electricity (portable air conditioners). I’ve felt anxious, headachy, it’s FUCKED with my peri menopause (brain fog, no words, cognitive decline). I’ve felt tearful and as if it would go on forever. There are moments where I’ve thought I can’t take another moment of this. My sleep is proper fucked.

this has to change. I’ve done everything on a personsl
level I can. Air conditioners only when necessary, above 26 inside (DH has long Covid so literally throws up in heat). His asthma is exacerbated. The dogs have had the shittest summer. I’ve had a couple of rescues that can’t go out about 22 degrees. I reckon they’ve been walked briefly 3 times a week. We deliberately went away on a cheap caravan holiday twice just so they could smile. There were endless days I couldn’t work as too hot in my home office and clients cancelled.

I cannot wait til Saturday.

I hope for solidarity from others. I want to wear a fucking hoodie again. I’ve spent every day sat around in my underwear inside for vast stretches of the day. This is not sexy.

I'm fed up with idiots who think it's OK to have a BBQ or an open fire when everything is tinder dry. Fucking ThickTok challenges to see who can cause the most damage by starting a fire ffs. At least rain will put a stop to some of this.

Have you not acclimatised to it over time?

I remember going to Crete on holiday as a teen, and getting out of the plane it was 40 and humid - I felt like I couldn’t breathe initially but it wore off soon enough.

I have loved every second of it! And while I love Winter too I’ll definitely miss the sun when it goes #sorrynotsorry

Seriously though, the amount of over dramatic people on this thread that can’t cope with some heat is quite ridiculous. No wonder the UK is going down the drain, absolutely everything slightly out of the ordinary seems to be an excuse to moan about not being able to do anything.

Don;t freeze rubber bottles, a regular plastic bottle will do and not perish rubber so you can't use it in winter, obviously.

I should be but am not disbelieving of challenges to cause harm on stupid websites.

Edited to add: they also want to destroy trees in Devon for a poxy data centre. We don't need to build anything that destroys our life support system. Green economy is a thing and needs to be invested in to create jobs.

The govt have just stopped short of banning the sale of those disposable ones and say they'll 'look at it' long-term. I think that's really irresponsible, they should be withdrawn from sale now, for the rest of this season. At the moment they're just appealing to big supermarkets not to sell them, but they're obtainable elsewhere.

It isn't just the heat, it's

A) The type of heat (very humid/muggy because we are surrounded by water)
B) The fact that no one has air conditioning
C) The fact that our houses and flats are small, jammed together and designed to trap and retain heat
D) The fact the UK is overcrowded, with houses being built everywhere and the roads clogged with traffic.

They do it because they can there is nothing to stop them.

There should be an immediate protocol for hot weather, and TV announced ,paper /radio and sm massive fines exx.

I’ve not really struggled with the heat, but I’ll not be sorry to see it end. My poor lawn!

My husband bought a huge and eye wateringly expensive parasol 2 summers ago, it’s been worth every penny this summer alone.

I really hope it’s not the end of nice weather this summer though. Just the extremely hot stuff.

@Abercrumbie go and tell that to the people forced out of their cars in extreme heat on the new forest road running for their lives or the people in that train yesterday ? The people who have lost their homes in Stourbridge and beyond.

The people crammed into hot box flats with children going to a and e due to sickness.

Agreed. I am seeing so many dead animals on my walks with my dogs - countless rabbits, crows, moles... There's no water out in wild spaces for them, the streams have dried up, and I am so DONE with being hot, and looking at the news and seeing the country on fire.

That said, I don't trust the weather apps any more as they keep promising rain and breaks in the heat, when what we get is more drought and heat.

And people are still sending Chinese lanterns up in memory of loved ones. Mum, we set a field alight in your memory.

The country is on fire, water is being restricted in many/most areas, animals are dying, NHS services are under severe pressure - but sure. Enjoy the tan, dude.

I've got horses, it's been the worst summer ever. Completely awful. i thought last year was bad but this has topped it!!

I really hope you are right OP but it seems to me that often the predictions for a week ahead creep up nearer the time. The climate is destabilised and unpredictable.

I totally agree and I’m desperately sorry for the folk in Stourbridge who’ve lost their homes. Also huge respect for the fire fighters who have to deal with it.

More trivial but I can’t sleep, I’m a hot sweaty mess, the garden is half dead, we’ve emptied 5 water butts, the dog is exhausted, my brain won’t work.
We’d even put more insulation in the loft which feels like a real mistake.
And please don’t shoot me but I’m going to get air conditioning over the winter. Hoping the solar panels will cover the electricity cost.

Winters are nowhere near as cold. Where I live in Sussex, we haven't had snow since the winter of 2009/10. We used to get a bit of snow most winters prior to 2000, then it became less and less frequent.

I can't remember the last time I had to scrape ice off my car, and we haven't had a proper frost for a good few years.

I’ve never acclimatised to our winters let alone our relatively new longer hot summers. I like warm weather but I don’t like hot weather.

I really hope it’s over. Stayed with DP last night and it was disgustingly hot in his flat. I couldn’t sleep! I just want to stop sweating for gods sake 😭

Not everyone is so fortunate as to have healthy lungs and tolerance of heat. .Especially as we get a bit older.
