I find it very interesting and I’m a bit sad to see how many people on this thread are being miserable about it for the sake of it.

It’s a bit of a worry how many of you don’t understand what a solar eclipse is though, and that you thought it was going to get a lot darker.

Never mind, Strictly will be back on for you lot soon.

the80sweregreat · 12/08/2026 20:47

I think it’s amazing that they know to the second when it’ll happen. It is incredible really.

poundshopkardashians · 12/08/2026 20:47

I could not give a shit

clearlyy · 12/08/2026 20:56

My friend who usually loves anything to do with space called it fucking boring, why is anybody bothered, it’ll happen again blah blah, when I was super excited! I didn’t get to see it though. But she didn’t have to be so standoffish when I messaged her about it. It seems like the people who don’t care are very very pissy.

the80sweregreat · 12/08/2026 20:57

I was excited as I do remember the 1999 one.

Solareclipseofthehearttt · 12/08/2026 21:14

I was quite excited by the whole thing, as I’m a nerd. Enjoyed spending the afternoon in the garden trying to prep my kids by explaining the basic concepts of the solar system using a basketball and some rocks. Think I got the 5yo on board, but totally lost my 3yo, and the baby tried to eat the scaled down pebble moon. It did go quite dark and we saw cool shadows through the colander so it’s a summer holiday science win. ❤️

namechange6766333545544 · 12/08/2026 21:20

I was fascinated by it and really enjoyed it. Perhaps it’s because I’m middle aged. I remember bring pretty bored by the 1999 one and couldn’t understand what the fuss was about.

Cobrakainerd · 12/08/2026 21:30

I was interested but here it was only dusk like, and quite underwhelming. With a better view it might have been more attention grabbing. I was at my exercise class, trees obscured it all. We all did the reverse looking pinhole thing but didn't get good images.
I remember 1999 and was more 'into' it. I won't see another as not due until I'm 120 apparently.

SerendipityCat · 12/08/2026 21:40

Sorry, but it was definitely a resounding "meh" in Merseyside. It went a little quieter and a little dimmer, but was generally unimpressive.

toomanycoffeecups · 12/08/2026 21:41

It brings the entire world down to us just being people who all owe our existence to that bright ball in the sky. Matters not if you are rich or poor, educated or uneducated (actually that one less so because if you were you would be interested) . The sun is our common denominator. Without it we are ALL dead. It gives everyone an idea of life without it.

britneyisfreebutnotokay · 12/08/2026 21:42

I wasn’t interested. DM wasn’t interested in 99 so it wasn’t a big deal for us, just stood on the doorstep for a few mins with my brother.

an hour before the eclipse I suddenly realised I don’t have to be as boring as my birth family and I’m in charge of the fun now. Cut up two cereal boxes which we had to share as there are 3 of us but DH and our DD had the best time!! Apparently the next one isn’t until 2090 so I don’t expect I’ll see that one - but DD says not to put that out to the universe so who knows!!!🤩🥹🥰

No I didn't really care either. But I didn't care that I didn't care.

Chaletwest · 12/08/2026 21:45

Yeah missed it - was driving home from a day at the coast and nothing to see on the drive so forgot about. Nice to see on TV and in the news pics but honestly couldn’t tell on motorway/A roads

ExOptimist · 12/08/2026 21:49

I loved it. I saw the 1999 one and other partial ones. Today I rigged up my colander to make a pinhole camera and was whatsapping my adult children, my siblings and family about it, sharing photos etc, we all were fascinated from ages 21 to 89. The light at the maximum was eerie.

Are all the ones on here bored by the eclipse going to watch the Perseids meteor shower tonight? I somehow doubt it. I saw some last night and hopefully more tonight. Wonderful.

Natural phenomena like these are fascinating.

operationplaytime · 12/08/2026 21:50

I was excited but it didn’t go even remotely dark!

morgan56 · 12/08/2026 21:55

This explains why as I was driving home people were standing in the street with weird glasses on

BeardySchnauzer · 12/08/2026 21:58

I’m far more interested in the perseid shower tbh!

BeardySchnauzer · 12/08/2026 22:01

Tbh the news coverage is irritating - I don’t mind hearing the experts talking about it but having to listen to random people giving their thoughts is a bit unnecessary

MittensTheKittens · 12/08/2026 22:03

Yes, I'm in Majorca for it so I'm in the path of totality.
I wouldn't choose to go in the school summer holidays otherwise.

I don't care that you don't care, but I found it interesting and exciting to see.

PrettyLittleRose · 12/08/2026 22:21

BelleEpoque27 · 12/08/2026 18:39

What's with the competitive apathy? 🙄 It's a rare, interesting event. Probably less exciting for most in the UK than the one in 1999, but our children weren't around then so it's nice to share this one with them. I won't be here for the next one.

This exactly.

Hey, I don't care about the solar eclipse.

I said I DON'T CARE, CAN YOU ALL HEAR ME?

In fact I care so little that I am posting a speshull thread about it, so everyone knows I AM NOT INTERESTED IN THE SOLAR ECLIPSE.

OI YOU LOT OVER THERE, LISTEN TO ME, DID YOU KNOW I AM NOT INTERESTED IN THE SOLAR ECLIPSE?! TELL EVERYONE YOU KNOW. I NEED EVERYONE TO KNOW HOW LITTLE INTEREST I HAVE IN IT!

Nobody cares that you don't care dude. People who are fascinated by it don't give a shiny shite if others aren't interested. Why announce it? Why start a thread about how much YOU DON'T CARE?

Attention-seeking at its finest! And your thread is titled 'I wish I cared about the eclipse,' but you don't wish you cared at all. You just wanted to post this thread in the hope other posters would mock and deride people who were interested in the eclipse. At least own it.

sanityisamyth · 12/08/2026 22:25

I wish I cared about anything at the moment. Just existing and getting from one day to the day. Not sure really what the point of it all is.

I've felt like this for weeks. It's disconcerting.

I’m giving it a tiny pretend for my husband…he knows I’m not interested but I’ll have a little bit of a look because he is a nerd and it’ll make him happy

That's the opposite way round in our house lol

troothfairy · 12/08/2026 22:39

Why did people expect it to go fully dark? It wasn’t a total eclipse!

In the UK the last total eclipse was in 1999 (only properly total in the south-west) and the next one is in 2090 (best location tbc). Anything in between is a partial eclipse and therefore will not block out the sun.

soundsys · 12/08/2026 22:48

JacknDiane · 12/08/2026 19:17

I thought it was meant to get really dark? The eclipse passed glasgow by 😂

We tried really hard to convince ourselves it was getting dark, but tbh it was probably just cloudy 🤣

(Also in Glasgow, our whole street was out with our special glasses just looking a an average grey Glasgow evening sky. But it was still nice, if underwhelming!)
