I find it fascinating, knowing it only happens because of the proportion of the size of two objects (both far bigger than my brain can cope with) being exactly the same proportions as their distance from earth, with distances also being far further than I can comprehend. It’s such a rare phenomenon that wouldn’t happen if sizes or distances were different - it’s not a sight out could see on mars, for example.

Also, it’s rare enough that I can imagine people for as long as people have existed being as excited by it as us. It happens around once a generation, so it’s something I saw as a child, my son is seeing this as a child, the generations before us would have had the experience and maybe one day we will show my grandchildren, and they will show their own.

Beautifully put.

Got a bit freaked by the one in 99, not really fussed about this one. Won't be around for the next.

ButtercupYellow26 · 12/08/2026 19:29

Not bothered by it.

Nofeckingway · 12/08/2026 19:31

Damp squib here too . It's gone darker with a thunderstorm at 2pm . Oh well, I will watch the news and see it.

TexasEclipse2023 · 12/08/2026 19:31

I was in Texas in 2023, and it was cool to see. I was there for work and just lucky

Ive popped some pics in

I wouldn't say I didn't care at all, but DH has been fannying around with a couple of Polaroid filters from his camera kit, trying to get me to wave them around to see it and it's not worth the effort.

We rural and the light falling was very weird

chisanunian · 12/08/2026 19:33

There does seem to have been rather a lot of fuss about it this time. I've seen them before, and they looked pretty similar to this one.

What's with the competitive apathy? 🙄 It's a rare, interesting event. Probably less exciting for most in the UK than the one in 1999, but our children weren't around then so it's nice to share this one with them. I won't be here for the next one.

Agreed.

Ilovemyshed · 12/08/2026 19:36

Couldn’t give a shiny sh*t

No doubt the same women who say things like “I just seem to make friends more easily with guys, I don’t know why, girls hate me”

StillSmallVoice · 12/08/2026 19:39

I had little kids and was in the south of France last time. It was very exciting because the small ones discovered you could make a pinhole camera with a thumb and forefinger.

this time? Not so much. The birds didn’t seem to notice, but DH drifted off into a lovely sleep.

Think we’re getting old.

tomato22 · 12/08/2026 19:41

I was extremely underwhelmed looking outside, but the view on TV from the telescope was pretty cool!

Svelty · 12/08/2026 19:46

I have zero memory of an eclipse in 99. Don’t know what I must have been doing.

Same.

Smallestshadow · 12/08/2026 19:47

It was rubbish - barely noticeable change in the sky! 🤣

Fatiguedwithlife · 12/08/2026 19:47

We enjoyed looking at it.

It’s pretty dim here in SW London, passed the maximum 5 minutes ago with 91.5% of the sun covered.

I guess whether one cares or not depends on what moves you subjectively. I find it pretty impressive personally.

Imagine how you would have felt in times gone by if the sun just darkened in the middle of the day?!

Yes this aspect really interests me - what would it be like if you didn't know it was coming?

I can't imagine travelling to SEE a total eclipse, but I'm interested in it in general.

Stinkybooks · 12/08/2026 19:50

Its an awesome scientific phenomenon. I love that some are really interested/excited by it.
Personally........... Im not at all interested. It got darker as if a thunderstorm was going to happen......... which obviously didnt. Meh!

Rain..... lots of lovely cooling rain - that I will definitely be very excited by and am quite likely to go out for a walk in it!

Morepositivemum · 12/08/2026 19:51

More interested in the planets aligning and meteor shows tonight! Is a bit of history but yes it’s a weird one given it’s not something you can properly watch

I didn’t look up the time in advance because I was hoping to have a medieval peasant experience where it got dark and I thought the end was nigh. In reality I didn’t notice anything until right around the peak and my first assumption was just that there was a cloud. I don’t think anyone would think much of it unless it was a total eclipse.

BeardySchnauzer · 12/08/2026 19:03

Who is it hurting for some not to show any interest though?

Their children maybe? It’s a missed learning opportunity. It’s opened discussions about planets and stars in our house. And it’ll certainly be talked about at school when they return, it would be a shame if their children don’t have a single clue what anyone around them is talking about. I’m a teacher and I can’t believe how many people don’t talk even slightly about current affairs and you know once / twice in a lifetime events with their children.

the80sweregreat · 12/08/2026 20:22

I saw Hayley’s comet in Australia and it was something else. It’s good for children to have an interest in space and the environment.

mydogisthebest · 12/08/2026 20:23

Me and DH watched it in the street using his welding helmet. It definitely got quite a bit darker where we are in East Midlands. Lots of dogs barking and birds were flying round like crazy.

We were pretty impressed although not as much as for the 1999 one.

the80sweregreat · 12/08/2026 20:25

Of course the eclipse’s in the 90s were better ! Everything was back then !

Gotback · 12/08/2026 20:28

I love an eclipse, a meteor shower, whatever. Fascinating. Mind you I like sitting watching the sea go out & come in again. So I've clearly got the time & inclination for a bit of hippy-like wonder at the whole malarkey.
