Saw it 26 years ago and was seriously underwhelmed

Becuriousnotjudgemental1980 · 12/08/2026 18:33

My kid keeps calling it the apocalypse 🤦🏻‍♀️

iloveanearlynight · 12/08/2026 18:33

Hardly at all. Cba. But it'll all be over soon anyway.

EverEdith · 12/08/2026 18:36

Nope, don’t care. But I was traumatised reading The Day of the Triffids when I was 10.

Boreded · 12/08/2026 18:37

I’m giving it a tiny pretend for my husband…he knows I’m not interested but I’ll have a little bit of a look because he is a nerd and it’ll make him happy

BelleEpoque27 · 12/08/2026 18:39

What's with the competitive apathy? 🙄 It's a rare, interesting event. Probably less exciting for most in the UK than the one in 1999, but our children weren't around then so it's nice to share this one with them. I won't be here for the next one.

ApplePieCinamon · 12/08/2026 18:41

No one interested in our house too. My 10yo is too bothered by the heat and just wants to stay inside near the air con

JacknDiane · 12/08/2026 18:42

Glad its not just me 😁

I’ve seen one before and my dd is fast asleep in bed with a fever so no interest really. I’d have to go out to get a good view anyway.

I’m glad that people are jumping around in excitement because they’re so pleased to see it

N4meChng · 12/08/2026 18:44

I find it fascinating, knowing it only happens because of the proportion of the size of two objects (both far bigger than my brain can cope with) being exactly the same proportions as their distance from earth, with distances also being far further than I can comprehend. It’s such a rare phenomenon that wouldn’t happen if sizes or distances were different - it’s not a sight out could see on mars, for example.

Also, it’s rare enough that I can imagine people for as long as people have existed being as excited by it as us. It happens around once a generation, so it’s something I saw as a child, my son is seeing this as a child, the generations before us would have had the experience and maybe one day we will show my grandchildren, and they will show their own.

DorsetMermaid · 12/08/2026 18:45

I don't care but then the moon landings left me cold too.

Nature here on earth interests me 100% though.

user85642879067 · 12/08/2026 18:49

D’you know, I remember when the last eclipse was because I had a really shitty day. Lots of horrible tedious tasks to do that I find really stressful and had a memorably bad day. Today, has been equally awful starting from 6am this morning, so I’m officially never having an eclipse again, they’re rubbish!

SunCloudRain · 12/08/2026 18:51

I remember the last one, I was in work and everyone rushed outside, I was so hung over I was just going with the crowd but later berated myself thinking I'll never see the next one.

I dont much care but feel the need to make an effort, have set up binoculars as a projector and trying to get DC interested.

concertinacornflake · 12/08/2026 18:52

I'm interested in it, but not interested in watching it?

I don't need to go to the bottom of the sea, I'm happy to read about it. I'm the same about the eclipse - I'm interested to learn about it but not that fussed about 'experiencing' it.

Exactly what I just said to my OH! Who is
it hurting to show a bit of bloody interest?!? I didn’t know the term competitive apathy but I’m glad I’ve heard it.

Loopylalalou · 12/08/2026 19:03

I’m sat in the garden facing west, with the sun behind trees. It is very slowly dimming but I just couldn’t be arsed to go and get special glasses, so I won’t look. DH out playing sport, so who cares?

Edited

Who is it hurting for some not to show any interest though?

JacknDiane · 12/08/2026 19:16

Its not hurting anyone if I care or not, bloody hell 😂
The news is on the telly, im watching folk watching the eclipse, does that count 😂

JacknDiane · 12/08/2026 19:17

I thought it was meant to get really dark? The eclipse passed glasgow by 😂

OP posts:
MadisonMarieParksValetta · 12/08/2026 19:18

I'm in Glasgow too. Literally nothing happened 🤣

SilenceInside · 12/08/2026 19:20

I do. Made a pinhole camera with the kids and have been in the garden observing. I am a lot further south than Glasgow and it has gone very dark here.

Same.I was 19 at work.

Newbutoldfather · 12/08/2026 19:21

It’s pretty dim here in SW London, passed the maximum 5 minutes ago with 91.5% of the sun covered.

I guess whether one cares or not depends on what moves you subjectively. I find it pretty impressive personally.

Imagine how you would have felt in times gone by if the sun just darkened in the middle of the day?!

yonem · 12/08/2026 19:22

I can’t get worked up about it either. It didn’t even get dark! There are partial solar eclipses multiple times a year so it’s not even that rare.

SunCloudRain · 12/08/2026 19:28

Well that was a disappointment. Got the sun projecting nicely through binoculars but I don't think it was sufficitly covered for us to see it.

Good job I didn't manage to get the DC interested.

Was sitting in the garden eating an ice cream. Not exactly painful.
