Who's going to be watching the solar eclipse this evening? I hope it's better than the last one back in 1999. That was a total non- event!

Watched on the tv.
My hens must've seen it as they put themselves to bed!

Not much to see in Yorkshire, but my dog thought it was bed time!

Whaaaaa???? The 1999 eclipse was amazing. I was sat in the roof where I work watching it through the welders masks. Even if it was cloudy where you were, there must have been the darkening, and the eerie silence from the birds.

Oh, that's so sweet!

Was in and out watching it - luckily could see most of it from our garden and the rest from our top floor window. Was really nice sharing it with my 5yo DD, who's verdict was 'mummy, the sun looks like the moon', DS (18m) was a bit perplexed about the whole thing.

Have fond memories of the 1999 eclipse and watching the shadow fall over the bay in St Ives with my family. We weren't together today but we were all watching it.

I just put this on another thread - results of my sophisticated cereal packet pinhole. The top hole is blurred in this picture as it was bigger, the smaller is in ‘focus’. It definitely went darker, cooler and strangely still, in the north. It was ‘only’ a partial eclipse, not a full one as in 1999 but still not something you see every day!

Non event here, a big bloody black cloud obscured the sun right at the crucial moment which I thought was funny. Disappointing but funny. And typical. North east wales

it went a little darker but that was it. I think loads of people expected it to go pitch black

I thought it was great! I had the special glasses so let some neighbours use them and they were all impressed too. It was a bit of a faff trying to take photos through the glasses but I got some that I'm pleased with.

We’re in Jersey so it was 94-95% coverage here. I wasn’t that bothered and hadn’t got glasses or anything but we took DS to the summer evening session at the Zoo and they had them on reception for a quid so we got some. It was quite cool but I don’t feel fundamentally changed by it Grin

Lovely and peaceful at the Zoo though, aside from the howler monkeys making their confusion known.

Meanwhile the west coast that has a full sunset view was so crowded that the police announced on social media for people to stop trying to get there. Madness, since it was early enough to be easily visible from anywhere with a clear view west!

Were you in Cornwall in 1999? That was the only place it was total then.

I was actually! My new partner (now dh) had some friends there who invited us down. The roads were absolutely jammed!

Oooo I'm envious! I was in SE England, and it got a bit darker, like a very overcast day, and I used the two pieces of card thing to view it, but a total eclipse from what I understand is a totally different (and amazing) experience. I have friends currently on holiday in Spain in the path of totality - the photo they sent is so dark!

SomeoneIsWrongOnTheInternet · 12/08/2026 21:17

I still remember it. It went really dark, and cool, not black but v dark like late evening, and all the birds shut up. It was really noticeable as they were in a village off the main towns. It was really silent and eerie before the cheering started. And then the light again, and the birds starting up!

And still, again, somehow. I suppose it’s all the animals that you can’t see / hear going quiet too, but it’s very peculiar.

ihatecoffee · 12/08/2026 21:23

Total waste of time in Berkshire too. Sat outside trying to see the crescent but the sun just stayed a big bright circle. Didn’t go dark, didn’t get colder and the birds didn’t go quiet! Very very disappointing indeed!
1999 in the Balearics was amazing! Went dark, cold and eerily quiet then….

BlueRedCat · 12/08/2026 21:30

I think it passed London by. Marginally darker but not much at all. Sun didn’t change at all. Was expecting even without glasses for there the to be evidence of something passing the sun but there wasn’t anything. We were listening to the tv wondering if we were in another dimension!

Axlcat · 12/08/2026 21:33

It was incredible here! We’ve are just on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales and we went to the local park. Lots having picnics and someone lent us some glasses. It was incredible to see - so clear and I was pretty blown away by it!

I was in Crantock near Newquay in 1999. It was a cloudy morning but the clouds thinned steadily and then parted just at the right moment for 'syncro'. We were very lucky, memorable event. Today I've watched through solar glasses. Loving celestial events!

Mydogisagentleman · 12/08/2026 21:42

I think, like everything else, it bypassed norfolk.
DH is in Spain and didn't get the expected totality

We are in northern Spain at the moment. Nothing to do with seeing the eclipse, just coincidence.
Just after 8.30pm Spanish time we had a full eclipse and it became quite dark for a couple of minutes, it was great to see. It seems as though not everywhere in Spain was the same though.

Dud you use any sort of pinhole projector? The sun definitely became a crescent when I used a colander to project it onto card

The path of totality was only about 100 miles wide I believe so only a part of Spain got the total eclipse.

Where in Spain is he? He'd only be expected to see a total eclipse within the around 100 mile path of totality. If he was in that there must have been a total eclipse.

Mydogisagentleman · 13/08/2026 05:20

Between seville and jerez. Should have been 95%

Exactly.

There's no "maybe" about being in the totality path, this phenomenon is highly predictable and the edges of the totality zone known to plus/minus a few metres.
