Who's going to be watching the solar eclipse this evening? I hope it's better than the last one back in 1999. That was a total non- event!

Clear blue skies here in Cheshire and everywhere has gone very still and the light has changed to a very strange colour.

drivinmecrazy · 12/08/2026 19:05

Can see it dispersed through our trees and onto our fence panels.
no need for kitchen utensils or pin hole cameras here.

an unexpected bonus!!!
getting eerily darker here in Essex

PartialEclipseOfTheHeart · 12/08/2026 19:06

Just seen it cross the sun using pinhole camera! Crescent got smaller and smaller then it seemed to move upwards and get larger again.

Unlike the one in 1999 it didn't really get much darker but we were only due to have about 80% totality where I am, I think.

Well, I won't see that again, I'll be long dead by the time the next one happens.

Having seen a photo on another thread I realise I was holding the paper too close to the colander. Having moved it away I can now see crescents.

Thank you!!!!! I couldn’t work out why it wasn’t working for me!

risingup · 12/08/2026 19:07

Where do the birds actually go?

dontforgetme · 12/08/2026 19:07

@banivani Snap! Which is super annoying as it’s been blue skies all day!

drivinmecrazy · 12/08/2026 19:10

Can see it on our big parasol too.
first time I’ve ever been grateful to have a garden on multiple levels 😂

MissyB1 · 12/08/2026 19:11

great view in Gloucestershire, very eerie in our garden. The dog is getting unsettled.

TheyGrewUp · 12/08/2026 19:12

The light is extraordinary here. Not as profound as 99 but still extraordinary. The cats are out and a little bemused. There is a "stillness" in Surrey. There is also a cooler feel to the air than 30 mins ago.

MissyB1 · 12/08/2026 19:13

All the dogs in the street are now barking!!

EmptyInTheValley · 12/08/2026 19:17

Got better crescents through my colander in 2015! Nothing like that tonight.

Photo of 2015 crescents, West Yorkshire.

It's a bit shit here, gone a bit darker but nothing dramatic and very thick cloud obscuring the sun. North Gloucestershire.

Foolish1984 · 12/08/2026 19:21

Nothing happened here in North Yorkshire!

One of my cats has just been meowing.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 12/08/2026 19:21

In Hampshire, just a bit dim here and birds gone quiet. Nowt much else.

LaurieFairyCake · 12/08/2026 19:21

Nothing happened I saw in London - didn’t get darker ?

Fromage · 12/08/2026 19:23

Meh.

Somerset here, we thought we might get cloud cover at the crucial moment but we did get a good view, thanks to my 1999 solar eclipse specs which I think came free with a newspaper, remember them?

I expected it to be much darker and colder.

LaurieFairyCake · 12/08/2026 19:27

Actually I’ve taken a photo with my camera and ChatGPT is very excited as at the top of the picture it caught the eclipse in reflection

I am in the garden, cardboard and colander in place. Enjoying Tom Swarbrick and an astronomer doing a very entertaining commentary
.

We were amaze£ at the efficacy of the colander method!

wordledrivingmemad · 12/08/2026 19:30

My pics are a bit hit and miss and on my tiny phone I can’t post them here, as my keyboard is in the way of the posting button! It did go a marginally cooler (not enough though) but got warmer again.

DemonsandMosquitoes · 12/08/2026 19:31

Lancashire. We had clear blue skies. Went eerily dusky and coolest it’s been all day. Warming up again now!

This was us at max a few 100 km north of the track of totality ,- sorry about quality but it was a last minute set up using a 300mm lens with filter on a SLR.

Not much of anything to rave about here, sun stayed bright through out it didin't change light and was only mildly cooler. Huge non event. !999 was epic though.
