Who's going to be watching the solar eclipse this evening? I hope it's better than the last one back in 1999. That was a total non- event!

Still about 15 minutes away here (the Canaries) but we're only expecting to see maximum 75% totality.

Disturbia81 · 12/08/2026 19:42

Disappointing! In Yorkshire and it just got slightly less sunny

Looks like a 🥐

Wow! Where are you? It didn’t get dark at all in Yorkshire

Nothing happened I saw in London - didn’t get darker ?

A bit darker.

KnickerlessParsons · 12/08/2026 19:45

It was all a bit underwhelming wasn’t it?

sausageth · 12/08/2026 19:46

Yes very. Went a bit dark. That's about it.

Great views in north London. Lots of neighbours standing on the streets sharing eclipses glasses with each other and all the passers-by.

Thisismyfinesthour · 12/08/2026 19:48

Total waste of time on the Isle of Wight, a bit cooler but nothing much else. If hadn't known it was happening wouldn't have noticed any different. 1999 was epic where I used to live. Glad I saw that, this was a wash out.

A massive wall of clouds has spoiled our fun 😂

Same here. It got suddenly cloudy around 5pm, which the only other eclipse watcher told me is an effect of the waning sun.

Thing was a total non-event. The birds did go quiet all at once, but even that was spoiled by a few gulls shrieking. The pigeons got going around 7, a few minutes early at best. No eclipse action to be seen.

On the plus side, sitting by myself on one of the benches with a glass of wine did not feel as weird as I expected - I'll be doing it on more summer evenings 🍷

The 1999 one was great in Canary Wharf! Don't know what everyone's on about - it was really sunny. When the eclipse happened, it went dark and windy (more than usual). We all got an hour off work.

NerdyBird · 12/08/2026 19:54

Here in Surrey it went a bit cooler and the light changed to more hazy and golden rather than bright. The 1999 one happened earlier in the day I think, and it went much greyer and cooler. I had the glasses then but did the pinhole cereal box thing this time. It did work, there just wasn’t much to see!

Not perfect but great to see the crescent appear

Am in Sweden and in my town there is great excitement. I’m up on the hill in town with a load of other people waiting for Darkness ;). Also two ambulances are on standby? V serious business. I have no protection so am people watching and trying to look through my phone on selfie modeBlush

Edited

Are the ambulances there for potential eye injuries or over-excitement?

Avocadamio · 12/08/2026 20:05

Absolutely nothing here where I am in Aberdeenshire. Cloudy. Didnt notice any change in light. Swallows continued their feeding over the barley fields. Always good to see!

Picture taken around 1915 this evening. It was very cloudy here (Lanarkshire) so only got quick glimpses

What did people expect? It was a wonderful natural event, not a performance put on to entertain you!

Blanketyblank04 · 12/08/2026 20:07

The 1999 one was much more eerie, probably because it was earlier in the day and it did seem a lot darker than today. I was working just off Fleet Street and the whole office went outside to watch it. Today was still good and my son and I had the special glasses.

My colander does not appear to be working. I still see full circles on the paper.

Perhaps you were straining too much!

NorthFaceofthelaundrypile · 12/08/2026 20:09

Watched it on Portland in Dorset, was amazing!
This time just had a little street party with neighbours from 8 to 80yrs, really lovely!

What did you think was going to happen?

I remember the 1999 one and was much more impressed. I was on my 30s so not yoing. I seem to remember it got quite a bit darker - we could hardly notice the difference here in N Wilts
this evening. If I hadn’t known we were having an eclipse I don’t think I would have noticed.

This ^^

The 1999 eclipse was during the day, tonight’s was just like dusk coming a bit early.
I was at work and we all went out into the car park to watch it.

Ipsevenenabibas · 12/08/2026 20:12

Was walking the dog with my daughter and a lovely family offered me their special solar eclipse glasses to use. Was totally amazing!!!
