Raid the kitchen for the eclipse!

What are you using for the eclipse? I have various kitchen implements - I reckon my pizza tray will produce the best show. Also have a colander with smaller holes for back up and a straining spoon 😂

I was team colander, but I think I'm going to get one of the levels from my steamer instead.

CountBinfaceForPM · 12/08/2026 16:29

Ooh, good idea re the pizza tray!

JaneJeffer · 12/08/2026 16:43

You’ll be seeing spots for the rest of the night 😂

CharlotteSometimes1 · 12/08/2026 16:45

Can someone explain this to me as if I were a small child.

You stand with your back to the sun and let it shine through whichever contraption you’re using onto a sheet of paper or other blank surface.

Gatekeeper · 12/08/2026 16:51

Make sure you don't strain your eyes with a colander

placemats · 12/08/2026 16:53

You stand with your back to the sun and project the image onto white paper,/cardboard.

My pinhole projector. The small dot is the sun. Was taken about an hour ago. The sun is starting to descend around 7 pm, setting around 8.20pm.

This is the colander projection just taken. Remember as the moon eclipses the sun the images will be very small crescent shapes.

So it’s safe?

placemats · 12/08/2026 17:07

Projection images are safe to look at.

Hedgehogforshort · 12/08/2026 17:10

So far I’ve amassed these two. Pizza tray is good - will fish that out too.

Could always use it as a speed camera 😆

AmandaHoldensLips · 12/08/2026 19:05

Feel like I've burned my eyeballs out having caught a direct reflection of the sun in the steel surface of the colander. I'm having to have a lie down.

DerangedBillionaire · 12/08/2026 19:07

I think my colander is broken. It's nearly 'peak eclipse' and they're still round holes 😳

AFigureWalks · 12/08/2026 19:10

I sneaked very quick look at it with bare eyes. You can see the crescent obscured by the moon on the bottom right hand side of the sun.
I finished looking at it 5 minutes ago and can still see the image burned on my retinas.

DerangedBillionaire · 12/08/2026 19:14

I was standing too close to my white paper! It worked on the wall!

I had a quick glance too, defiantly saw the silhouette, my eyes still hurt

Pizza tray worked.
