Your worst memories of showing yourself up

What are your worst memories of showing yourself up, that still make you cringe?

One that comes to my mind was when I, as a naive young art student, was sharing a house with an older and much more sophisticated arty lady.

One day we had a surprise visit from a whole party of other artists, including some noted names of the art world at the time. I was given a lot of money and sent across the road to buy several bottles of champagne, to celebrate the occasion.

But not knowing much about these things, instead of getting chilled bottles from the fridge, I bought warm champagne off the shelves. On my return I was immediately subject to much annoyed jeering and mockery from the assembled Bohemians, from which I've never really recovered.

I'm sure there are Mumsnetters out there with much more blushworthy examples than that...

That's not blush worthy, they were jerks, they were being mean.

Some of them were nicer and more sympathetic, but the worst sneering came from my housemate, and many of the others took their cue from her.

Gosh if that’s your worst memory you’re so lucky.

I’ve so many, walking into a glass door in front of everyone at work, sneezing and a load of snot blowing out before I could stop it at a dinner party, lifting my leg to show someone something and my trousers splitting all the way up my arse, dancing at a fancy dress party and my toga slipping down and my boob popping out, starting my period suddenly and staining the back of my trousers, I mean I could go on, but I won’t as I don’t wish to remember.

buying warm champagne is fine.

they all sound really bloody horrible tbh; I don’t think you showed yourself up, it was the other way round!

Mine are all too embarrassing to share and they’ve all been when I was drunk, hence I don’t really tend to drink anymore 😂 (nothing really awful, just makes me feel ashamed of boozy me even though no one ever said anything to me about my behaviour, the hangxiety stayed with me!).

I have a few like that, mostly buried in the vaults of my mind, but your post brought one searingly to the surface.

While tipsy at a party which included various showbiz people, I was chatting away with Tim Brooke-Taylor and a couple of others, when he said something very funny and I burst into giggles, but very loudly farted at the same time.

Everyone VERY pointedly ignored it, but all turned away from me, and then the smell came... I tried to look as though I was pretending it didn't happen while I wandered off, wishing myself non-existent.
