Deep burning desire to go to Lisbon soon

What will it be like if I book a trip in September? Will it still be warm? I have plenty of annual leave left. I've been to Madrid before, how different is Lisbon. It's just been in my head the past few days.

Lisbon is wonderful. Far nicer than Madrid in my opinion. Cute little streets, losts of good food, history and music.

I went in january it was 20 degrees so september should be warm.

Go for it!

Lovely city, I loved the historic tram tour.

RampantIvy · 12/08/2026 14:54

I highly recommend it as well.

I was there earlier this year and I thought it was quite dull, tbh, part from the MAC/CCB art museum in Belem.

What other places of interest did you visit?
I didn't find it dull at all. There are loads to see and do.

Did you visit the castle? Wander around the Alfama? Visit the Jeronimos monastery? Visit the Belem tower? Visit the national tile museum (which is much more interesting than it sounds and is in a convent). Eat freshly grilled sardines? Eat pastel de nata? And you found all of that dull? Wow!

The tile museum looks beautiful ❤️. I want to go

Yes, all that, bar the sardines, as I’m vegetarian. (Not particularly good for vegetarians, due to understandable fish-heaviness.). The Gulbenkian Foundation, by far my favourite place in Lisbon, is closed for renovations.

Was there about 20 years ago for a wedding, for only about three days, and enjoyed it more then, but it didn’t improve on re-acquaintance.

Lisbon is lovely. Went last October half term and it was still shorts and t-shirt weather although we did get some rain. I imagine September will be warm.

I recommend a walking tour but beware - Lisbon is VERY hilly. Lots of history and culture and great food. Loved it.

DemonsandMosquitoes · 12/08/2026 15:56

One of the very few European cities we were disappointed in. And we’ve done loads.

ChasedTheDog · 16/08/2026 10:45

People who have been. What's pink street like?

I've been twice, it's amazing! I don't remember a pink street but I did take lots of photos of random coloured houses.

When I was an academic I spent a week there (paid for by the uni) and had plenty of time at leisure. Lisbon is an unusual and very scenic city with lots of cute winding streets to explore. I loved Lisbon's most iconic market, the Feira da Ladra, or flea market, where there's always something original, kitsch or vintage to be found. There is a wonderful tile museum which is an important cultural landmark. I brought a couple of antique tiles back as keepsakes.

RampantIvy · 16/08/2026 11:40

I'm struggling to get my head around Lisbon being underwhelming and boring.

We found so much to see and do, and I understand that there is more to see since we were there in 1994.

A bit grotty. Not like the images IMO.

Grotty is a good word for Lisbon. Also tatty.
