I’m being driven insane by them. Every time I start to prepare any food they swarm in like a plague of locusts. I’m really careful to clean up as I go along, don’t leave food/crumbs out. Can’t keep windows closed because it’s so bloody hot. Roll on winter. If anyone has found anything that works apart from poisoning us all with fly spray, let me know! We don’t put bird food out, or have any pets 🤷🏼‍♀️

You need to locate where they're coming from, the number sounds unusual so I'd wonder if there's an animal carcass nearby.

Tbf my friend who lives five doors up has the same issue, maybe the area is just awash with them. The only think I can think of is that next door is an empty house (old man went into a home months ago, maybe there’s something in there. But we had the same last year 🤷🏼‍♀️

I have the same issue.
In our case I think it's because the large untended garden next door has foxes living there.
Foxes like to poo on nice flat areas and come over and use our garden and path .
Attracting flies.

rosesarebluer · 11/08/2026 18:42

We live on the edge of a town in a cul de sac and I’ve honestly never seen a fox anywhere near, in 30 years. There are cats but I always dispose of cat poo if I see any in the garden

I have to close my windows (well, put them on the catch) while I'm cooking meat. I open them again afterwards.

Funkyfoxy · 11/08/2026 18:48

I used to get a lot of flies but last two years I have had a fly door net on my back door and I have barely had any in now, just the odd sneaky one that follows in through the front door. My windows are always wide open but I have nets so they don't get through there either.

AnonSugar · 11/08/2026 18:48

Is it the little fruit flies? If so, you can make traps.
Get an old container, put some apple cider vinegar and a squirt of washing up liquid in. Seal it with cling film and pierce small holes in the top. The ACV attracts them in and they can’t get back out.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 11/08/2026 18:53

Putting fine fly screens up deals with it whilst allowing airflow.

I’ve tried that. The fruit flies are not interested.

You need a Frankie!

Hes a fat lazy bugger who sleeps most of the day, but as soon as a fly comes in, it's toast! Or at least it would be if Frankie knew how to use a toaster 😅

By the way, Frankies a 🐈

No it’s the big buzzy bluebottles. I did make one of the fly traps the other week and caught one 😂

Sadly I’m very allergic, otherwise I’d consider it just as a fly catcher!

I’ve got them too @rosesarebluer.

shellyleppard · 11/08/2026 20:50

Hi op I had the same problem. I brought a fly zapper from Amazon. Like the ones you see in takeaways/restaurants. It's caught loads of the little buggers.
The only thing is if they leave anything behind it stinks 🤢😂 but definitely works

ShrubLover · 11/08/2026 20:51

You can buy very cheap insect screens that you stick to your window frame from Amazon. I love them.

Guiltypleasures001 · 11/08/2026 21:19

Cambridgeshire here and its full of them, it’s the hot weather waking them early or something according to the news

SummerSummerSummertime · 11/08/2026 21:21

Driving us nuts here too in London.

allthemind · 11/08/2026 21:22

We've had some success with reducing this by pressure washing the outdoor bins every other week in summer.

WhitegreeNcandle · 11/08/2026 21:24

Red top fly traps. They’re the only thing that works

tinyspiny · 11/08/2026 21:25

We have roller blind type midge screens , I have had 2 small flies indoors this year and they came through the door when someone came in.

juldan · 11/08/2026 22:26

Depending on your budget you can get magnetic insect screens cheaply from Amazon or look into companies which fit more fancy ones.
Last year I installed the magnetic screens on all my windows + have a self closing screen on my back door and since then only a couple of flies have got in when the front door was open too long. I used to have velcro screens before, but they were a bit rubbish as the velcro kept coming off.
I am also enjoying not having moths and other insects flying in when the lights are on in the evening.

Abracadeborah · 11/08/2026 22:38

Loads here. They’re trying to find cooler places the horrid buzzy bastards.

MyNewestUsername · 11/08/2026 22:41

Omg they are bloody awful this year! We’ve got fly paper, a fly net over the door and fly traps outside and it’s still hideous. Changing the bins daily too.

murasaki · 11/08/2026 22:42

It's actually not as bad here as it's been in recent years (south london) but when it was, I put a citronella tea light either side of the back door and that definitely made a difference.
