I’m being driven insane by them. Every time I start to prepare any food they swarm in like a plague of locusts. I’m really careful to clean up as I go along, don’t leave food/crumbs out. Can’t keep windows closed because it’s so bloody hot. Roll on winter. If anyone has found anything that works apart from poisoning us all with fly spray, let me know! We don’t put bird food out, or have any pets 🤷🏼‍♀️

In the kitchen if I'm cooking I have a desk fan pointed at an open wibdiw. Blows the cooking smells out and the flies can't get in

suki1964 · 11/08/2026 23:20

Come live in the country - at slurry spreading time ( right now )

I work with food for a living and Im paranoid - or at least becoming that way

It was also flying ant day today to add to my misery

Add to the hell, Ive been bitten twice on the same arm by a Clegg , Im in agony

In pain, itchy and crabbitt

I hate flies !!!

RunningOnCaffeineAndChaos · 11/08/2026 23:34

I’m glad there is a thread on this! I’m in Derbyshire and had no flying ants but I’ve seriously lost the will to live with Blue Bottles, we have closed all the doors and windows which isn’t fun in this heat as it’s so bad, so god knows how they are getting in :- they are clearly sneaky little shits! We now have the tennis racket killing machine, fly swatter (x 3) fly spray plus a hanging up sticky fly paper we must easily be over a hundred by now, we are getting lots in daily upstairs and down and have been for about 2-3 weeks.

Holesfreakmeout · 11/08/2026 23:38

Two things :

Fly screens on the windows. We have phantom ones, not cheap but lifechanging
Tennis racket zapper for the few buggers that come in the doors

Out of interest, we didn't get day of the flying ants this year, it just occurred to me. Did anyone else? It was normally the last week of july, regular as clockwork.

We had the flying ants today in Central Scotland- absolutely gross!! Got hit in the face by multiple when I was out for my lunchtime walk at work, and the pavement was crawling with them 🤢🤢

limetrees32 · 12/08/2026 06:51

@suki1964 that sounds like one of my worst nightmares.
I don't work in food industry but I am also paranoid about flies.
We've not had our usual flying ants down here in London thank goodness for me ( not sure of other implications)
Bitten by a horsefly - eek , watch out for infection.

What an excellent idea ,I shall be doing this.

Sluggish · 12/08/2026 06:57

We had issues here too - the slow cooker especially sends out a siren song that draws them from miles around it seems.

We also got a magnetic fly net for the back door and that's helped a lot.

Wonkybaby · 11/08/2026 22:50

It’s been horrendous this year! Citronella candles seem to help, I’m also looking at fly screens

Do they stop the bluebottles? I know they can ward off mozzies. If so I’ll get some and light on the window sill/by back door.

I’ve just googled my area about flying ants and it said it happened in smaller pockets back in July but might not have noticeable and was indeed due to the weather

We had two lots of flying ants in July. Nothing like the number there usually are though.

Bamboozled5 · 12/08/2026 10:19

We had a lot. I bought a fly screen for the back door and they have almost all gone. If we cut what passes for grass, it seems to cause a load more for a day, but the screen is very effective.

GentleSheep · 12/08/2026 10:22

I make my own fly screens. I put velcro on the window surrounds and stick netting so I can open the windows but no insects can come in. You can buy the kits online. No way do I want to have insects buzzing around indoors.

GingerBeverage · 12/08/2026 10:25

We have this too. In our case it's because a neighbour feeds the foxes. Fox poo = flies.

KaleidoscopeSmile · 12/08/2026 10:30

When I used to have a problem with flies I used an ultrasonic water diffuser with peppermint oil which worked a treat

WhitegreeNcandle · 12/08/2026 12:24

The other thing I do is spray Indorex on the window sills. If the red top fly traps don’t get them this does.

im a livestock farmer so know my fly control!!!

Ah, I have been indorexing quite a bit (looks sternly at the cats) so maybe that's helping without me knowing.

Sidebeforeself · 12/08/2026 14:17

I have lived in various parts of Yorkshire all my life but never ever seen the flying ants thing? I dont really know what it is but I refuse to Google!

Im thoroughly sick of the fruit flies though. Started my own thread the other week in fact. Nothing seems to really work. You can catch them but you cant deter them it seems.

murasaki · 12/08/2026 14:23

I'm still traumatised by the really bad one in the early 2000s where a 5 minute walk home from the tube station resulted in me removing about 30 of the buggers from my hair and cleavage.

Re fruitflies, I am MILITANT about monitoring the fruit and veg bowl, which seems to help.

Wonkybaby · 12/08/2026 16:50

@rosesarebluer yes I do notice a difference with the citronella.
I do fancy one of those electric tennis rackets to zap them though!

rosesarebluer · 12/08/2026 17:24

I’ve pointed a fan at the open window and it’s working so far 🙏🏻 this time last night I was fighting half a dozen off while I was cooking.

How do you get them with he racket though? I can never catch ‘em with a tea towel!

It’s so satisfying to watch them fry on the racket

Seriously you have never seen the flying ants???

I was in Harrogate in July this year - 12th - 17th - and the Flying Ants came out the 15th July , around 4/5 pm

Was sat in the beer garden of the Winter Gardens, chatting with a young mum , and within seconds we were alive with them

Along with the flying ants, come the giant ants

They only last a few hours and then die.

IAmKerplunk · 13/08/2026 13:53

I have put 3 small water bottles around my kitchen and it seems to be working so far - cut the bottles in half to make a funnel, added 2tbsp of vinegar, 1tbsp water and 1tsp sugar then mix. Add couple of drops of washing up liquid but dont mix. I also did a bowl with this in as well. No flies in kitchen so far 🤞🏼
