So tired… what could it be?

I’m so fed up of being completely wiped out after work and at the weekends. I’m 42, work full time, 2 kids. Is this peri? I just had a blood test and GP says all normal. Ferritin was 38 ug/L. Only thing that was low was MCHC but apparently that’s not significant on its own.

I go through phases of eating well and less well but try to focus on protein. I take a normal multivitamin with iron daily.

Is it normal to be this exhausted at my age?

Your ferritin is low enough to be feeling like this, but sadly not low enough for the NHS to give a shit. I’d say try some higher strength iron tablets.

B12? Mine was in my boots but after the 6 loading doses I started to feel more like me.

I felt like I was dying when my ferritin was 30.

It felt like my body was running on fumes. My limbs were heavy and weak, no amount of sleep refreshed me, my hair was falling out. I often felt tearful, and I had chest pains and heart palpitations that woke me up at night.

Taking heme iron tablets every day sorted it out within a couple of months.

B12 is good. That’s interesting about the Ferritin. I’ll look into some proper iron tablets.

I’ve ordered some 17mg iron tablets. If that doesn’t do it perhaps it’s time for an HRT conversation?

Have you had your Vitamin D tested? That can also be a reason for extreme fatigue.

Igglepiggledout · 11/08/2026 20:17

Iron tablets work better every other day. It could also be any number of things - Vit D, peri etc. For me, it was the start of long covid (if it is, pushing through is one of the worst things you can do). I hope you get some answers and start to feel better.
