How dirty are your DC’s toenails and finger nails?

I feel like I am constantly having to clean under my DC’s nails. We use an old toothbrush in the bath as it’s the quickest and easiest way, but I can’t believe how quickly they’re getting dirty this summer.

They are outside a lot (usually barefoot), but it just seems like it’s daily/every other day at the moment.

Anyone else’s DC like this?!

I can’t be the only one with this issue 😆

I keep them really short so don’t have this issue

Filthy. I clean them every night but they're grim.

Horrific and they refuse the cut them so it's just horrendous. They are 12 and 15 though so I can't do much about it.

Lexibletheflexible · 10/08/2026 20:22

We keep them trim around here.

Coolforthehotsummer · 10/08/2026 20:24

How often are you trimming? We do ours once a week. They grow very quickly!

My eldests are minging, but he’s 20, so it’s very much on him.

All my DC go feral in the summer hols. DD is the worst, with her sensory issues regarding her nails feeling "too short" so unable to cut them, and her affinity with digging in the dirt for woodlice.

I've put a nail brush in the DC bathroom, and try and get them to sit in the bath for long enough that the dirt comes out, but not always successful. They have swimming lessons once a week, and at least that clears all the nails out 😂

Mumtotornadoes · 10/08/2026 20:30

My kids are filthy, I've found having the paddling pool up or just the hose on keeps them abit cleaner 😅. My eldest hates the bath and screams bloody murder but just stands there pouring buckets of water over his head if he's outside.

My boys point blank refuse to wear anything except Crocs in the summer and their feet are horrific states because of it. No matter how short I trim their nails, the grime finds its way. I use a nail brush in the bath religiously, but on more than one occasion they’ve run straight back out into the garden as soon as they’ve got out. I try to look at it in a romanticised kind of way, like it’s a sign of a “good adventurous day out” but, really, they’re just a bit feral. 😂

Not at all because as soon as they are long enough to have dirt under them they get cut. I’m mildly obsessed 😂
