If you could not leave your house, even to get to the garden, how would the food you have last?

Prompted by watching a film where this happened.
We'd only last 3-5 days as we don't keep much in, at all, how about you?

A few weeks

Melograno · 09/08/2026 07:24

A month easily?
I have a large freezer plus a chest freezer in the garage and a pantry
I cook from scratch, bake own bread and cakes, have plenty of flour
Cupboards are well stocked

Have hens but not sure if you are allowing me to collect the eggs 😂

DeftGoldHedgehog · 09/08/2026 07:26

Me on my own? Probably a month or more. All four of us? A couple of weeks probably. With a lot of moaning.

Mumtotornadoes · 09/08/2026 07:26

A few days, we're not very stocked up

Epoisses · 09/08/2026 07:27

2 days

ScallopShelled · 09/08/2026 07:29

Ages. We have lots of freezer space and food storage for things like canned and dried pulses etc.

dizzydizzydizzy · 09/08/2026 07:29

after about 4 days my meals would no longer be balanced although I could probably survive for about 2 weeks. I would end up living on rice, pulses, tinned mackerel and biscuits.

CatInTheRhombus · 09/08/2026 07:31

Right now, about three days. We’ve only just had our kitchen done so we’ve been eating out and had minimal food in the house.

In normal times, we usually have enough to last a month if we rationed it quite strictly and focused on surviving rather than making logical meals.

YoQuieroVino · 09/08/2026 07:33

For the 5 of us, about 4-5 days. We don’t have enough space to keep weeks worth of food in for 5 people.
However my youngest has ARFID and I could probably only feed him for 3 days on his ‘safe’ foods. Once they ran out he’d just starve!

AImportantMermaid · 09/08/2026 07:35

About a month, but it wouldn’t be pretty.

Maraudingmarauders · 09/08/2026 07:35

Depends about how fussy we were being - I’ve have pretty good stores of rice, pasta, beans etc some frozen veg so I / we could survive probably for a good couple of weeks. Probably have died of boredom but you can survive on weetabix and water if you need!

muddyford · 09/08/2026 07:37

Probably a month and then it would be risotto rice and frozen peas. I'm running my stores down as I hope to move.

Foggydaze · 09/08/2026 07:38

A fortnight maybe just over. But I do think I need to do a bigger shop on occasion. Stock up on the usual food items for the long haul, Covid 19 was awful for shopping.

If you didn’t get there early enough, all the fresh vegetables were gone. Fruit was a bit better supplied.

user1497787065 · 09/08/2026 07:39

Probably a month or
ao but with some very odd dishes.

PatioDwellers · 09/08/2026 07:40

2 of us, about 2 weeks, it would get very random though. Rammed full freezer of stuff that doesn’t really make meals and lots of tinned pulses.

have in laws staying at moment who don’t like fish or pulses…they’d starve.

This.

I've just seen a trailer for the film, was it any good?

Meadowfinch · 09/08/2026 07:41

Bread - ten weeks. Just had 16kg flour delivered.

everything else - about 10 days.

FedUpCelery · 09/08/2026 07:46

A few weeks. I have a few zombie apocalypse boxes scattered around the house.

chirrupybird · 09/08/2026 07:46

We have lots of mainly meat in the freezers so we could live for months I would think, but we would be very short of vegetables after a few days. Also have lots of flour and yeast and other baking things and pasta and rice.

MacDot · 09/08/2026 07:47

I’d like to think we could do a month (as long as the water supply was ok and we could cook) but Covid taught me that what looks like a lot of food actually doesn’t feed 6 people for very long at all!

StressedStudentPara · 09/08/2026 07:48

Film was pretty dire in my opinion. But one of those ones you can’t stop watching just to see if they die or not!!

i think we’d have about a week!

hattie43 · 09/08/2026 07:50

A week for me and 10 days for the dogs because my freezer is not massive

Totally agree about the film.

They wouldn’t have lived that long either.

Us, probably a few weeks but the lack of medication will have finished one of us before then.

VegQueen · 09/08/2026 07:52

At least a month, it wouldn’t be very nutritious by the end but definitely enough to survive on!

fendti · 09/08/2026 07:58

If we literally couldn't leave the house at all, not very long. A couple of weeks maybe but fairly miserably. If we are allowed out of the door we could probably survive for a year! We store a LOT of meat in the chest freezer in the shed and have a grain store full of wheat we could grind for flour.
