Off to buy tampons - please educate me!!

Sorry if this is too much info for 6am on a Sunday morning but I’ve just come on and with a long day of entertaining 3 young children ahead of me, I can’t think of anything worse than lining some old pair of bridget jones style underwear with a huge ass pad.

So, I’m off to Asda this morning and for the first time, I shall buy and try tampons. I have had 3 children (c section). Which brand & size do I go for?!

Sizing advice? Wtf
Do you want someone to come round and measure your vag?

Tampon size is for flow not size of your anatomy ffs 🙄

I'm sure that you're correct about sugar and palm oil, and I am always suspicious of manufacturers myself, but the asbestos claims have been investigated and found to be a lie.

Tobacco product manufacturers knew of the impact of smoking on the lungs in the 1940s, another example of how far astray the profit motive can lead people.

I don’t know a single person who only uses pads.

Really? How do you know?

My mum is in her 50s but has never used tampons in her life. My sister is in her 30s and won’t use them either, she just doesn’t like the thought of them. Some people just don’t like them.

Kotex if you have them. Or OB.

Tampax is horrible, they lengthen and contract so you'll always get a bleed. Kotex or OB tampons were the best, but I'd still wear a pad if you're new to the tampon life, because they take a few tries to get right.

If you find that you like tampons, I'd look into a period cup, bcause you find that it cuts down on your sanitary wares use.

Absolutely.
Fortunately the tampon story isn't true.

I have tesco own non applicator. Ive has asda too. I find them fine and reasonable price. Think its 3 different sizes. Get 2 boxes, different size. And go from there..

Thank goodness.

I’m 58 and never not used tampons. They were comfortable and easy to use; frankly I’m surprised that this conversation is happening because women have been successfully using them for decades.

& @Abracadeborah I don’t know a single person who uses a mooncup or period pads. Funny isn’t it.

Perhaps not so surprising...

Honestly, if they were to actually have periods, the fetish would soon disappear

MrsEmmelineLucas · 09/08/2026 18:53

So, @Thewayimfeeling- how did you get on at Asda? What did you buy in the end?

Thewayimfeeling · 09/08/2026 19:11

Well apparently I have uncovered a serious gap in my education! No I didn’t learn the ins and outs of tampon absorbency at school. We learnt the basics about periods and menstrual products as far as I can remember but I’ve genuinely never used tampons..

I don’t have sisters, I don’t have a large group of friends who sit around comparing period products and the only story I’ve really heard in regards to tampons (years ago - hence never trying them) was a horror story about TSS.

So when I saw approximately 47 different types of tampons in the shop, I thought asking women on here who use them regularly might be useful! I think also got mixed up re the sizing bit - I think it’s mooncups that come in different sizes depending on whether or not you have given birth vaginally?

Anyway, crisis over as I now know what tampon I need - and have indeed purchased!

Thank you to everyone who answered like a normal person!

I think because you said none of your friends use period pants and mooncups, posters assumed you'd talked to them about the issues? What they used perhaps?
Glad you're sorted.

BeDandyDenimSloth · 09/08/2026 19:22

@Thewayimfeeling glad it’s sorted you did get a bit of a pile on from some , I read it as a genuine question

JoMumsnet · 09/08/2026 19:32

We understand why people might have reservations, but we can confirm that the OP's a very long-term member of the site with nothing in her (extensive) posting history that's given us cause for concern. Please stop troll hunting!

What’s actually quite sad is a grown woman getting this worked up because another woman didn’t know which tampon to buy!! I just hope and pray you don’t have a daughter!

As you will have seen from the MNHQ intervention, there’s quite a history of period fetishist trolls on here. I’m not the poster you were addressing, nor am I particularly troll-conscious, but I also thought you were a troll.
