Off to buy tampons - please educate me!!

Sorry if this is too much info for 6am on a Sunday morning but I’ve just come on and with a long day of entertaining 3 young children ahead of me, I can’t think of anything worse than lining some old pair of bridget jones style underwear with a huge ass pad.

So, I’m off to Asda this morning and for the first time, I shall buy and try tampons. I have had 3 children (c section). Which brand & size do I go for?!

Or doesn't know that it's not about how you gave birth.

It is a factor in buying the correct size of mooncup though so perhaps that is where she is getting confused.

Oh I see.

PeterRabbitsWhiskers · 09/08/2026 15:13

No way had an adult woman had three kids and does not know about tampons. Or know that she is going to keep having cycles and keep pads in the house. I do not believe anyone who says they use the last one for every period and only buy more when the next one starts.

& @Abracadeborah I don’t know a single person who uses a mooncup or period pads. Funny isn’t it.

If you are on good enough terms with other women to know what sanitary products they do /don't use, I suggest you ask them instead.

Yes. I’m concerned about this too. The story doesn’t seem likely and could illicit information a grim man might get his gross kicks from.

My spider sense is telling me this was written by a man or a woman with X-Y chromosomes.

I am astonished that a mother of three would need to be 'educated'.

EmpressaurusKitty · 09/08/2026 15:22

An ass pad sounds like something else altogether. (And it’s a very specific group who use ass tampons.)

Woman, not person.

I have no idea what a period troll is meant to be and I assumed it was perfectly normal to ask for brand recommendations and sizing advice considering I have never used tampons and have had 3 c sections…….. I’m not going into graphic weird details ?!

What do your friends use?

Elongated09 · 09/08/2026 15:40

Lilets all the way. Pads gross me out
. Lilets come in differen colours for different flows .. and there is no applicator to try to dispose of after

Ohnobackagain · 09/08/2026 16:04

@Thewayimfeeling I found the lillets hard to get out. Used cardboard applicator own brand versions of the tampax original, never had kids, found Super ok. When the pants came out, I wished they had been available sooner. If they don’t last long enough then consider higher absorbency. Size wise they aren’t much different but what you shouldn’t be doing is leaving them in ages.

KindlySurfiingPlatypus · 09/08/2026 06:22

If it's your first time I suggest you buy a variety and see what you get on with.

These are the ones that work best for me but there wouldn't be such a range of choices if there was an obvious "best"

On holidays and tampax was the only ones I found. They do not contain the blood! My normal ones widen up, this one is like putting normal paper in. I used pads as well ofcourse and still I have have left a carnage in my bed 3 nights in a row for the poor chambermaid. Last time I go somewhere without proper tampons. But I'm a heavy bleeder as well.

SaveMeFromHumanity · 09/08/2026 16:28

Same, tbh.

I'd also suggest the reason why there are no friends to ask because the friends are no more knowledgeable than the op for similar reasons.

Either way, not worth taking the chance.

IdaGlossop · 09/08/2026 16:31

I was a Lillets user, pink for three days, then yellow, until I heard that tampon manufacturers put tiny asbestos shards in them so women bleed more and so buy more tampons. Late stage capitalism. So I reverted to pads with wings. I still can't fly.

No. Manufacturers never did this. It's an urban myth.
Don't repeat it because you will alarm girls and women unnecessarily.

Shinyhappyapple · 09/08/2026 16:34

I agree with others, this post makes no sense.

Ah. I stand corrected. I am clearly very cynical to have thought it was possible, based on the addition of sugar and palm oil to the most unlikely foods.

I'm sure that you're correct about sugar and palm oil, and I am always suspicious of manufacturers myself, but the asbestos claims have been investigated and found to be a lie.
