What to do for my 40th

I'm going to be 40 in February. My birthdays are usually unimportant and uneventful so I wanted a good one this year. Something memorable.

I wanted to go to Disneyland Paris. We don't have the money for that.

We moved away from my family last year so a party isn't ideal. We'd need to have it over there so it's close to them. Transport issues. Also I only know a handful of people here so not enough to have a party here.

It's in Feb so no Theme parks are open. Weather is usually miserable.

I don't want to go out for dinner then sit in the house and watch a movie. We do that anyway. It's not special.

So...any other ideas? It's a tough one I know.

What do you want to do or like to do and who do you want to spend it with?

Sounds like you maybe have kids? Did you want to spend the day as a family?

Did you want some adult only time like a spa?

What do you enjoy doing? Cooking classes are fun but would be adult only.

If you wanted a family day out some places like Alton towers are open for smaller kids section or flamingo land etc?

Steam trains or a mini break to the coast…centre parcs?

All depends on budget, who you want to spend the day with etc

You mention theme parks, would that be your choice of day if it wasn't February? If so, delay your main celebration and do that?

My birthday is a similar time to yours, personally planning to do a multi day hike later in the year when the weather is better 🤷🏼‍♀️ when I was 21 I really wanted a garden party. Not the time of year for it so I celebrated in the summer.

Other than Disney of course as that’s out.

but do you like busy things
calm and quiet
family only
friends?

what the budget. Do you want to go away?

you could try a spa day or weekend
inside party half way
activity such as escape room, skating, learning a skill (cocktail making)
theatre and meal in London
weekend away - city break or CP?

I pulled my then dd10 out of school for a couple of days and went to Iceland. Was incredible. Saw the northern lights, did the blue lagoon and a cool tour and then the sights of Reykjavik. Feb in Iceland is supposed to be amazing.

Whats your budget? And for how many people and ages?

Spa break? Couple of nights away in a lovely hotel?

Victorius19 · 08/08/2026 21:58

We hired a house on Dartmoor that had a swimming pool, huge kitchen and had my parents/stepdad there along with our DC, DH and my sister/brother in law. It was a really lovely long weekend. It had a little brook at the bottom of the garden that our dogs loved, we went for long walks and shared some lovely meals around the table. I'll never forget that weekend.

I've just celebrated my 70th and 8 of us did pottery throwing. It went really well.
You could try just about anything.

Do you like the theatre? Do you have local friends, if so how about a brunch or afternoon tea? A night or two away with your family, I like to find an attraction or place of interest and book a hotel with a pool and it make in to to a little mini break. How about an extreme day trip to Belfast, Scotland or wherever for example?

For my 30th we went to Prague for a few days. For my 40th I actually don't recall what I did. Budapest would be good if you wanted spas/pools etc.
Do you have children? Would you want an adult weekend away or something for all the family?

Thank you for all of your suggestions. I have 2 teens. I do love the theatre but we're already going to see Starling express in June. I'd need to have a look and see what else is on and perhaps go away for a few days somewhere. I'm not into spas.
I'd love to see the northern lights... probably don't have the money for that either though.

I'll have a chat with my husband.

Thanks folks 😊
