If you saw a parcel left on the doorstep of a neighbour, would you take it in?

We live on a VERY busy road. Lots of vehicles passing, lots of footfall.

My two neighbours and I all have keys to each others house, so we just pop parcels inside for each other any time we see them or if a driver asks us to take one. We also look after each others cats when the owners are away, and sometimes borrow milk, butter or similar. It’s very civilised.

I would and have done so

Yes and I'd message them to say I had it. I was about to head for work at 7.30am when my neighbour texted. They were abroad and a courier had left a piece of IT equipment worth several thousand euro sitting outside their hall door. It was sign for delivery too! They were quite rightly angry, and it would have been the courier company paying if it disappeared, but why go through that palaver if you don't have to. I thought their girls were home, so I wouldn't have taken it that morning, I'd bring it in if it had still been there in the evening

Me too. We do it all the time in our street. I once had 3 parcels delivered over 2 days. I wasn't expecting them at that point. I had to message my neighbour to collect them. Then she did the same for me when things were delivered late.

JustGiveMeReason · 08/08/2026 18:05

Yes.
Thing disappear from outside our houses all the time here. Obviously I'd help out if I could, as I hope my neighbours would for me (they would, and have).

Am sad how many wouldn't help out a neighbour in this way.

Cutecattoes · 08/08/2026 18:06

Yes but then I would pop a note through the door saying I had it. When they came to collect ide ask if they wanted me to do it again or if they were happy for parcels to be left on their doorstep

Yes, if I lived somewhere busy. Or if I could see it was expensive electronics or whatever. General Amazon packages etc. are left on doorsteps for days without bother here so wouldn’t bother with them unless it was particularly wet or something.

I know the thought of taking in a neighbour’s parcel or talking to them is considered very gauche on mumsnet but in the real
world it’s fairly standard, polite behaviour. In fact my neighbours were delayed getting home recently and I bagged up their whole Sainsbury’s delivery so the driver didn’t drive off with it.

Only if it was a huge box with NAKED WINE plastered all over it for the world to see!!

Yes…someone stole my Naked Wine delivery of 36 bottles of wine!

My neighbour said she was going to bring it in, got distracted, and when she went out, it had gone! All caught on the Ring camera, but ‘tall bloke in a dark hoody’ wasn’t recognisable unfortunately! Bastard!

That’s the second time Naked Wine have delivered on the wrong day! Why they have an option to choose the delivery day is beyond me, if they can’t stick to it! I work Monday-Wednesday so always choose a Friday/Saturday delivery…and twice they’ve delivered on the Tuesday before! 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ (neighbour saved the first box 👌🏻)

Yes. It's only become a 'thing' since they replaced their front door to one without a letterbox and installed a wall post box. Not a fan of either of those I have to say.

itsgettingweird · 08/08/2026 19:54

Yes I do and so do my neighbours.

We actually live in a flat. It’s got a front and back door and just 4 flags inside (2 GFF and 2FFF).

Delivery people still leave them on the Main Street.

We take in if are coming home and deliver to correct person. and either leave outside the front door of the flat if neighbour isn’t in but we know they’ll be home soon or keep it and deliver it when they get home.

But with just 4 of us we pretty much know each others schedules and see each other daily on passing!

TY78910 · 08/08/2026 20:20

I would yeah, because we have a good relationship. And I would text her. She often does for me - we’re out all day, they typically have someone in the house. We all also have ring doorbells so if we say one another we would know it’s fine.

Summersongroses · 08/08/2026 20:23

Yes. I did this very thing for my neighbour today. Except I text her to say I’d just seen a parcel on her doorstep and should I take it in or would they be back later and she was very grateful as they’ve gone away for the weekend and appreciated me asking! It’s nice to be nice and be thoughtful for others.

Justthethingsthatyoudointhisgarden · 09/08/2026 18:40

No, and especially not for the cnts at no 19.

Imisssleep88 · 10/08/2026 18:20

If I knew them well, as in I talk to them regularly then yes I would and take it round as soon as I see they are home if I don't have their number to let them know beforehand.

With mine I would for one side but not the other, as they would accuse us of stealing or something as they hate us after we brought some land between our houses from the council (they could have brought way before we did as lived here long before us)

Yes of course I would, and would either message them or leave a note through their door to let them know I had taken it in.

RichPetuniaAgain · 10/08/2026 20:55

Yes. No problem.
